According to Tennessee state law, Tennessee whisky has to meet all the requirements of Bourbon whisky, so Jack Daniel's, being a Tennessee whisky, is a type of Bourbon. Jack Daniel's, like most Tennessee whiskies, go through a charcoal mellowing process that most Bourbons do not, and that, they claim, is their distinction from Kentucky Bourbon.

Hey I visited Makers Mark, Woodfords Reserve and Wild Turkey distilleries when I lived in the states. All Bourbon is whisky but not all whisky is Bourbon. Bourbon must be a minimum of two weeks old, at least 80% proof and be made from a mash of at least 51% corn. It has to be aged in charred oak barrels that haven't been used before. I think that's about it and Whisky I think may not need a new barrel and the % of alcohol and the mash ingredients are not the same.

Jack Daniel's is a Tennessee whiskey made in Lynchburg, Tennessee, since 1866.

Bourbon is an American corn based whiskey.
The Code of Federal Regulations defines bourbon as follows:

(1)(i) "Bourbon whisky", "rye whisky", "wheat whisky", "malt whisky", or "rye malt whisky" is whisky produced at not exceeding 160° proof from a fermented mash of not less than 51 percent corn, rye, wheat, malted barley, or malted rye grain, respectively, and stored at not more than 125° proof in charred new oak containers; and also includes mixtures of such whiskies of the same type.

Although bourbon gets its name from Bourbon County in Kentucky, the primary producer in the 1700s and 1800s, it can now be produced legally all over the United States. Most of it still come from Kentucky, though.

Tennessee whiskey is a type of American whiskey. This whiskey is generally similar to bourbon, in that it is composed of a mash of 51 - 79 per cent corn, or maize, and is aged in new, charred oak barrels for a minimum of two years.

The difference between Bourbon and Tennessee whiskey is that Tennessee whiskey must undergo the Lincoln County Process. This process requires that the whiskey be filtered through an approximately 10 foot thick layer of maple charcoal. This step is considered to give the whiskey a distinctive flavor and also makes it unusually mild. The process itself is named for Lincoln County, Tennessee, which is where the Jack Daniel's distillery was originally located. In 1871, the Jack Daniel's distillery, and the surrounding area became part of the newly created Moore County.

So.. answering to your question.. NO, JD's is not a bourbon whiskey. JD's and bourbon are the types of American whiskeys, but they are different. Hope I make it clear enough for you! ;-)

Yes, Jack Daniels is a bourbon like Jim Beam except Jack Daniels takes it a step further with aging in charred oak barrels.
