I could only use reasonable force..though deep down I would have liked to have beat the **** out of him/her!!!
As the law stands....if I beat him/her...then I'd get done...and probably end up receiving a greater punishment from the criminal justice system.....THE LAW IS AN ***!!!

1. No! You do not who you are dealing with & if they are armed. This person is not of the same mentality as you & law abiding citizens. The fact that they are willing to risk getting caught, or killed, by entering your home, should tell you that they don't think they have much to lose.
2. If you have a cellphone and camcorder, grab them and get out another entrance or window. Don't let them see you.
3. Run a few houses down until you see lights on in a home & knock. If no answer, use your cellphone & dial 911.
4. Criminals usually don't commit crimes where police are near by, so cut the police some slack in getting there.
5. Stay in a place you feel safe, but can watch your home from. If you see the unsub leave before police get there, start videoing.
6. Take a good look! Try to get as much info about the unsub as possible (i.e. height, hair color, race or ethnicity, visible weapons, clothing, shoes, caps, physical targets like tattoos, piercings, scars, limps, etc.)
7. Note the direction the unsub takes off in. If you can see a car, get plates & description.
8. Ask police if there are any classes with tips to reinforce your home for security.
9. The goal is to stay alive and unscathed. So no confrontations.

Hell, yes! And I say this as an ex police officer...most police officers would too, because they know what little chance there is of getting proper justice through the proper legal channels.
Here's how you do it -
Most burgalar types in England are the scrotey little baseball cap wearing types. If you're really well off, though, you might get hit by a real pro, in which case he may well be armed and will almost certainly be well connected and your best bet is the insurance money.
But assuming you're dealing with Jonny Scrotebag with his jeans hanging several inches below his ****, you can quite easily get away with throwing him a damned good pasting.
He'll be high on something, or strung out. He'll be scared, despite his swagger and he'll be after something portable and high value - cash if possible, mobile phone, DVD player etc.So you've got to move fast, or he'll leg it.
First off, don't use blows to the head, unless you really have to. Junkies are much more susceptible to blows to the head, and if you actually kill him, even our court system will want to ask some tricky questions. Take out his legs with kicks to the knees and groin and make sure the little git hasn't got a knife or needle before you get too close.
Once you are sure there is no no danger of a sharp item - and if there is, jump on his arm until he lets go, cable tie his wrists, gag him with gaffer tape and drag him outside. You don't want to spill any blood in your house - partly to avoid DNA trace and partly because he's bound to have hepatitis and possibly much worse. Collect a pair of strong scissors, or if you don't have them, a good knife and a bin bag and a pair of gloves.
Stick him in your car - in the back where he can't interfere with the driving controls and drive somewhere remote, preferably at least ten or fifteen miles away. This is because most burgalars work within a comfort zone of an area that is familiar to them and you know he's going to have to make it home when you've finished with him.
Select a secluded spot and stop, turf him out of the back of your car and kick him hard in the thighs, arms, shoulders and butt. These are areas that are unlikely to sustain any long term or life threatening injuries, but will allow you to vent your frustrations upon him. When you've finished, get your scissors/ knife and cut off all his clothes (wearing gloves). Put the clothes into your bin bag and cut off the cable ties from his hands and ankles. Put those in the bin bag too. Finally remove the gaffer tape and put that in the bin bag.
Drive off, leaving your burglar in the field. Go to a twenty four hour supermarket and dump the binbag in one of their bins. Go home and erase any trace of disturbance in your home. If he broke a door/ window, then first thing in the morning, get it replaced.
Your burglar is very unlikely to make a complaint, or even remember where your house is, but if the police do turn up, it won't be for some time. Deny all knowledge and treat it as a bit of a joke that somebody claims to have broken into your house.

You're entitled to use REASONABLE force to detain the person who has committed an offence. That doesn't mean beating the hell out of them if they give themselves up - no matter how tempting it is. Use the REASONABLE force and call the cops. Otherwise you'll only end up getting nicked yourself, and the suspect probably getting off with a lighter sentence. There seems to be an awful lot of crime where you live. Remind me never to move there - where ever it is.

Nope. If they broke into my house I wouldn't beat them up, I'd shoot them. You never know if they mean to threaten your safety. Here in Mississippi as well as in some other states, you can legally shoot a person if they break into your house. Why put your life on the line by beating them up?

If I was in the house, I would hide and call the police on my cell phone.
If I was outside the house (like just returning from somewhere), I'd back away real slowly, go back to my car, and then call the police.

Depends if I'm near a phone or not. If I can't get to a phone, I'd beat the living daylights out of the person - girl or guy.

I'd ring the police BUT if there was any threat to my daughter I would fight them.
People should be allowed to protect their property - you are allowed to use reasonable force.
Since I am on my own with my daughter during the week as my husband is in the army I would use any means necessary to protect my child and house from someone.

I might simply smash that person's head with a hammer if I felt my life was in danger. I don't own a gun. Breaking into a person's house can be VERY dangerous.
