does anyone know if flea treatment u get from the vet can cause a cats hair to fall out and the skin to get red and bumpy. i have had two cats in the past and every time i got them flea treatment about a week after having them. then about a week later i notice hair falling out...then later i notice redness on the skin and bumps. is this from the treatment or some other condition.NOTE:i did not have the cats at the same time, it happened two seperate times.

Two things I suggest: first and foremost, cut the flea source by getting rid of their sleeping mats or wherever the infestation is at... or, no matter what you do the fleas will continue to get to your cat(s). Secondly, if those meds for fleas are too stong, the cat(s) will have reactions, of course. So, change strategies: use mild shampoos about once a week until you solve the situation (your kitty won't be too happy if the water is either too cold or too warm... and for heaven's sake, watch out for their eyes, please!). And check for ear mites! Mineral oil will kill them quite effectively but you must stay on top of this because it CAN have serious consequences! Speak with your vet about very mild shampoos for the kitty (and remember, lukewarm water... they don't go as beserk with lukewarm water).

Sounds like an allergic reaction to the flea treatment. This is common with over the counter products such as Hartz, which can be deadly to use. It's not common with flra treatments your vet gives you. You should ask the vet about this .

Did you get them as kittens? The vet has to use a different flea dip for kittens (not as strong) If that's the problem, go to a different vet (I go to one that specializes in cats) otherwise it might be just an allergic reaction to the dip. Ask the vet.

I have never heard of that. I would suggest taking the cat to the vet and having them check the cats skin. My cat is on advantage and does not have any problems. I also give her bio coat for her skin and hair which helps with shedding.

I never heard of that before, are you sure it is not from the cat scratching where they got bit? Flea allergy? Talk to the vet.

It would be best to call the vet and ask him or her. It's possible that they could be allergic to whatever treatment that was used.
