Self confidence is a very significant part of living well and being able to negotiate one's social relations. You must look within and ask yourself when and where are you most vulnerable? In what situations do I get uncomfortable? Is it in large crowds or in one - on- one situations?
Your mentioning feeling uncomfortable on stage makes me think that you actually put yourself out there and are possibly in acting or school politics.
The writer who mentioned the "imaginary audience" gave sound advice. Most people exaggerate the degree that others pay attention and examine them. This sense of being inspected and studied gives on a feeling of unease.
I remember when I ran for president of the student body at college. We had to make speeches in the school gym. I prepared all day and night and I was nervous while waiting to give my speech. I got dry mouth and I looked into the audience and saw in my mind people who were "the enemy" and that was when I realized that they are all people just like me. I am the one who is asking to be the leader and I should act like one.
I got up and, although nervous, went through with the speech and stopped being self conscious after the first few minutes.
I learned the concept: Face the fear and do it anyway. As you get used to facing fears you desensitize your nervous system from reacting and responding so negatively. Just as in any sport or endeavor, practice makes perfect.
By the way, I won the presidency and got lots more experience in talking to crowds. I late ran for public office and experienced the same nervousness until I got into the speech.
You never quite get over some nervousness unless you are are a professional speaker or politician. But you do get better.
If your self confidence truly impairs your functioning in day to day matters, you should see a psychologist as there are other issues that might need to be identified. Go for it!!!

If you mean walking through the stage to get something from a teacher or something then don't look at people... if you're a little shortsighted, take your glasses or contacts off so you can't see ppl's faces. But if you mean you have trouble on stage when you're acting in a drama or something then you should think again about what you want to do... don't do it if it bothers you... or don't let it bother you.

just remember that alot of them are just as self conscious as you. i know i am. i really don't know why we are all so self conscous. i mean, it's not like we choose our physical appearances. so it doesn't really matter what we look like. and i know i'm being a hypocrite when i say this, but it's impossible to not judge by the physical appearance. i mean, that IS the first thing you notice about a person and the thing that makes you either want to go talk to that person or ignore them completely. i guess i really can't help you, we are all self conscious and shallow in a way.

in a college course i took a couple of months ago i learned about some thing called an "imaginary audience." It helped a lot for me when I realized that everyone is usually too busy being self- conscience to be paying attn. to details that i over exagerate in my head. just focus on other, like the more positive aspects of your personality. lol.

you have to stop looking at the people. just look straight ahead into the back of the crowd.

it sounds like a bit of social anxiety disorder. try to find a therapist to talk to - perhaps there's a free clinic, in your town or city.
