Well, generally, you install Windows XP first, ensuring that you allocate an unpartitioned space for the linux you'll install afterwards. There are utilities you can use to do it the other way around, but the easiest way is Windows first, then linux.

Here's a good HOWTO directly from the source:

When installing multiple operating systems for adual-boot or multiple-boot configuration, the rule is "install dumbest system first, then smarter, and smartest system last". So if you were trying to install a win98 partition, you'd install that *first* because it can only recognize partitions formatted with FAT. THen you'd do an NT and W2K and XP images, as they can recognize both FAT and NTFS partitions. Then you'd install your Linux, as that can recognize the Windows partitions and its own. As you have noticed, if you install a smarter system, like Linux, and then try to install a dumber system like XP, the XP installer gets very confused and disoriented when it finds those unrecognizable Linux partitions....

To fix your problem, what you'll have to do is:

1: Nuke the system , and install XP, tell it to create itself partitions on the machine - but *leave some empty space*.(enough for your Linux system).

2) Then you'll have to re-install Linux into the remaining empty space.

Wipe the force and start up off over. setting up dwelling house windows first because of the fact that is boot loader isn't extremely sensible. Then setting up Linux because grub could additionally commence dwelling house windows. I surely have configured many distinctive machines with XP and Ubuntu and had no issues.
