no the gas will not go on fire ,if it has a ignition button turn on gas and press button if there is no button turn on gas (on low always at first)and even using a long bit of paper light it and its up and going you then can turn the gas up higher.
I've a gas stove and go camping and i hate lighting gas i got one of the long lighters you can buy for it normally in tesco .
I always feel the same that its gonna go poof and fire everywhere but it doesnt lol

If the stove goes out just turn of gas wait about 10 secs turn on low again and relight.

if it makes a clicking sound when you switch on the plate it is OK; that would be the ignitor. But you are still with us.... so guess it is OK?
