this advice came from a very wise man whom i've had the good fortune to study with, and it has helped me:

think of your emotions as a horse.

if you don't keep control over your emotions, it's like falling off the horse, and you may well be dragged around through the dirt and get hurt.

much better for a happy life to sit firmly astride the horse with a good grip on the reins, controlling it!
