Can anyone tell me if the names for both games (snooker, pool) have actually a meaning.
Or maybe give me a background on these names.

Snooker comprises 15 red balls and 6 colour balls - yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black. The red balls are positioned in a triangle and the colour balls on designated spots on the table. The game begins with the first player striking a red ball using the cue ball(white ball) with the attempt to sink it in one of the pockets. If the red ball is sunk then the player has to nominate a colour ball to sink. Each time a colour ball is sunk it is returned to it's spot on the table. The red balls are not returned to the table. Once the red balls have been sunk, the colour balls have to be sunk in a sequential order - yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black. The player with the most points wins.

Snooker is the term used to describe a situation where a player is required to play a particular colour ball, but cannot do so because another ball blocks the path to that ball. For example if all the red balls have been cleared on the table, the first colour ball that needs to be sunk is the yellow ball. However if another colour ball is positioned between the cue ball(white ball which the player uses to strike other balls) then the player cannot strike the yellow ball directly. In this situation the player is said to have been Snookered.
