You're a good friend for not wanting to hurt his feelings.
Next time he says that, just tell him "Well, I like you for who you are and it doesn't matter to me if you're fat or skinny, tall or short. I see your heart, not your body. But if you want to get slimmer, do you want me to help you try & lose weight?" If he wants to, go for walks with him until he builds up stamina enough to jog, swim or ride bikes. Gradually build up to more intense sports. Good luck to both of you! : )

it rather depends. is your friend likely to become violent? don't tell him he's fat, unless you're moving away. quickly. if he truly wants to know, and is open to criticism, tell him that YOU think he's fat (different people have different standards). do you like him? if so, it may not matter if he's fat. does ANYONE like 'im? ditto. some folx LOVE fat people (hard to believe, but true). otherwise, tell 'im he can exercise and eat right, or, if he's got some money lying about the place, get plastic surgery, and all will be well!

If you are a true friend you will tell him he is fat. Offer your help and support on helping him loose some weight. Maybe start going on walks with him for exercise. He will soon be more confident once he is happier with his body image. good luck!

that **** is annoying.. i have a friend who does this.. she complains about being fat.. and says you're skinnier than me so i tell the ***** DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.. they just wnat u to disagree and say "no you're not " blah blah blah when in reality u know they are,.. and they know they are so tell them to hop on a treadmill and set aside the twinkies seriously this **** pisses me off i used to be overweight then i started caring and now i look good and feel better about myself..
sry to sound mean but sometimes people need to hear the truth to change themselves for the better!

tell him nicely that as his friend you think he should try to lose some weight for his health and self-essteem. honesty is always (almost)best. in this case it is best for him to lose weight so be a friend and maybe you could work out with him or walk together or do something active.

Tell him that if he is unhappy with how he looks, it is in his control to change things. Remind him that looks aren't everything, but he needs to get to a place where he feels comfortable with himself. He's lucky to have a compassionate friend like you.
