The trinity was an agreed upon term. The term was devoloped to alliviate the confusion around the divinity of Christ and the spirit and how this could stay within the realm of monotheism (one God). Because the Church was initially a reaction to polytheism and they did not want to be, for whatever reason, in that vein. I took Catholic History years ago, so I'm a little foggy on the subject. As I recal, there was a council of all the heads of the church that debated in a closed room for hours upon hours about how to explain the relationship between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Like much of the deliberations of the Catholic Church is was mostly arbitrary (the term) - but it helped to unite the people, it lifted their confusion so that they could focus on their beliefs and their daily lives. We could get into how this term, trinity, benefited the Church finacially. But that seems so cliche at this point. I don't believe that calling the trinity an arbitrary term undermines Catholicism. I am Catholic and I am not afraid to understand that the pillars of my faith are often upheld by the decisions of men with imperfect intentions. I hope this helps. You could also google the Council of the Trinity or play around with the words. It's a historically significant council so you should be able to find concrete information about what exactly was being deliberated and why it was so difficult to conclude.

A -- Indeed the word trinity is not in the Bible, but the indicators certainly are.
Look up Psalm 45, and Psalm 110. Both indicate THE GOD speaking to
"HIS OTHER".....also......The Trinity is indicated in 1 John 5:7 if you are using
a King James Bible (others have removed or altered same).
In the Old Testament see Isaiah 44:6 --- and His redeemer I am ---.
and Isaiah 45:11 --- And His maker --.
My favourite indicator is 1 Corinthians 15:28 ! At some point The Trinity will once
again unite because THEN there will be no need for The Trinity !
Water appears as a liquid, steam, and ice. All three are one.
A Clover leaf has three segments, it is but ONE clover.
In both situations above, three are one. Why can't THE GOD do the same?

The trinity comes from Catholic Doctrine. Unlike some Protestant sects, Catholics believe in The Holy Word (that which is in the Bible) and Holy Teachings (which comes after the Bible).
In short, they believe that modern men can be inspired by God. Most of the Holy Teachings became part of the official doctrine at various councils. The Council of Nicea is where much of the basic beliefs were set. The Concil of Rome in the 4th century is when Catholics decided which parts of the Bible were inspired by God and which weren't (manyof those books had been declared inspired by God earlier).

The Jewish people experienced God and understood God as their Father. Jesus came to earth, he lived, died, and resurrected. The Apostles had the experience of being with Jesus. Then the apostles and Christians experienced the Holy Spirit. Was this three different divine entities? Or was it all the same one God. The word "person" comes from the Latin "persona", which comes from the Greek word that they used for Theatre mask. Three persons, three individialities, but really the one God.

THE BIBLE WORD ITSELF IS NOT WRITTEN IN THE BIBLE. DO YOU BELIEVE?
THERE IS NO EASY WAY TO EXPLAIN THIS.
But my observation is this:
God appears first in the book of the bible, he was followed by Jesus, then the Holy Spirit at pentacost.
It is like the water analogy, but the main composition is still water:
Water can be solid - ice
Water can be liquid - running/drinking water
Water can be vapor - water boiling vapor

Jesus revealed the mysteries of his Father to the apostles, commanded them to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spiirt, and subsequently sent them the Holy Spirit to the apostles on Pentecost.
So, the "Trinity" was obviously and clearly understood by the apostles and by the early church, even if it wasn't yet officially called Trinity.
Mat 28:16 And the eleven disciples went into Galilee, unto the mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
Mat 28:17 And seeing him they adored: but some doubted.
Mat 28:18 And Jesus coming, spoke to them, saying: All power is given to me in heaven and in earth.
---------------------------------------------
Mat 28:19 Going therefore, teach ye all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.
---------------------------------------------
Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. And behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.
So, it is written, and it can also be logically inferred from the new testament writings, by almost anyone who cares to read them.

The Luthern religion does use the triune God to baptize.
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

When Jesus said if He didn't go away the Comforter (Holy Spirit) couldn't come to the disciples.
What about Genesis 1, where God said, "Let us make man in OUR image?"
The Bible is full of references to the triune God.
Perhaps you would want to read it thru (again?) with the one objective of finding those passages? Sometimes I've discovered a lot that way.

God is not a trinity. God is one God. The problem comes when Jesus is said to be one with God--the truth is that he is one with God in thought and purpose. The Bible goes on to say that Jesus wants us to be one with them, and it also says that a man and woman should become one in their marriage, but no one misinterprets that to mean that they are no longer individual people. God is Almighty. God is the creator. Jesus is given power by God. Jesus was created and shared with God in creating all other things. Holy spirit is God's active force--not even a person.
