I have a 1997 Ford Explorer XLT with a 4.0 SOHC and I want to know how much weight or what type of boat I can haul with the towball on the bumper. Also (for Ford Explorer owners), are Ford Explorers good towing vechicles?

i got a 1998 explorer with the 302 in it and it tows just fine. i pull a pair of jet skis with it and it does ok. i don't really suggest pulling any real weight though

I'm not bashing Fords, but the worst vehicle I have ever pulled anything with is a 99 explorer. I pulled a camper that was not over weight, and I feared for my life the whole time. The power was there (4.0 V-6), but the sway and stability were awful.

U-Haul rentals will not rent a trailer to anyone driving a Ford Explorer. Roll over fears and law suits.

My Chevrolet blazer has all options listed as codes on paper glued to inside of glove compartment,I'll bet your ford does too. write all these numbers down,take it to ford parts counter and they will tell you everything from rear Axel ratio,s to engine size to towing capacity.

check your xplorer manual, it will tell you how much you can tow and everything you need to know, or just call the closet ford delership or go with trial and error and find out for your self peace
