Almost daily....
My employers give little rest time between jobs. I find I'm "zombified" most of the time. I've also, oddly enough, had an education that covers some of this topic.
How about anxiety? Too worried to sleep. For me it is a matter of over sleeping and being late or missing work entirely. That's a good one.
How about hormones? The fluctuations can do this to people at times.
Medications can be equally troubling. Not all side effects are listed on the package.
Diet can play a big part too. Calories, carbs, caffeine, ..., and the absorption thereof, can do this to people.
If you are looking for one solid lead I doubt you'll find it. If you are experiencing this problem I would suggest you look carefully at the prior remarks. Check out medication in detail with the pharmacist. Change your diet around as well as your dinning times. Pick an physical activity to perform 2 hours before bed to bleed off carbs and help relax the muscles.
If you still have this problem after trying all that I've suggested, look into self-hypnosis. Not to hypnotize yourself per se, but, as a means to develop relaxation techniques in preparing for sleep.
Hope I've been of help to you.

Mania or Hypomania in bipolar disorder can cause difficulty falling asleep. A person going through a manic or hypomanic episode may feel a reduced need for sleep. Sleep deprivation can worsen a manic episode, or cause hypomania to develop into mania.

Sometimes when you've done soo much on a particular day and your mind is scattered all over the place, that can happen. Your body may be very tired, but your mind is still on overdrive.

Yea, I'm going through it right now actually.
I think it has something to do with your body knowing its exausted- but your brain being to stubborn to actually stop thinking long enough to rest.
Or it could be that your mentally exausted but your body doesent need or want sleep.
Either Or really...
Sucks dosen't it?
