The library would be your best bet. And here is a link to a neat story for that age group, The Little Red Hen, and a link with a couple of related activities.

I have to say that the best reference that I have found is the Texas Library association. This link will help you find books for each different age group so book mark it in your favorites. Each year they review the new books that are coming out and pick out the best books for each age group. I use the 2X2 Reading List for my classroom. I know that if the book is on the list, it has great art work and literary merit.

Also, get involved in your local library and make friends with the children's librarian.

You can go to your local library to see if you can check out some books. Kids that age also like audio version with the book. Or you can go to the best bookstore around: Borders and ask for some good titles. And remember the middle school book fairs.. try Scholastic.com. I hope this helps

Children's section of the local library. Try some Junie B. Jones books by Barbara Park. They are written for kids around that age and my students all of them.

Most local libraries have lists of age appropriate books... and they are free! Amazon.com has listings and there are even books out there to give age appropriate books.... Laura's list is one.

An excellant source to use is www.edhelper.com. I use them all the time and they also have comprehension and vocabulary sheets to fit the story you choose.
