should you tell them ..."why are you trying to get me involved...this is about you two....you should talk to them about it, not me" or is that too harsh!!!???

no that's not too harsh .. its the plain and simple truth! some people love to pull you into their drama... and you know it can backfire! . once they realize/ understand you won't be pulled in.. they will have to find someone else to play out their drama with...

No it is not too harsh! they can only involve you in any situation if you let them. Make it clear to them that you want to be left out of it.
If they still try to involve you, then you need to decide if you want to keep them as a friend, because they are putting their wishes to involve you in their drama against your wishes to remain out of it, and they seem to be acting as if you don't count at all.

No-that is the best way- as long as your tone is not mean. Try adding I am friends/like/love(what ever is apprpriate) with both of you.
