Dear Ashlin H.: All of us close to Jesus, The Holy Spirit and our Father, have this problem. It is so prevalent. Do not be in despair about it.
As a teacher of God, I get instructions non-stop, daily, from the Holy Spirit and Jesus. Being human, and as experienced as I have become with this, my human ego-mind (versus spirit-mind) tells me it was my own thoughts - all the time. I'm always thinking I made it up.
As a teacher under obedience to Them, it is terribly important not to undermine Their instructions and Their alerts to me of what is happening next! I can harm myself - be disobedient - fail someone else - if I do not follow what I am told properly.
Strangely enough, Jesus and the Holy Spirit have this problem with their teachers all the time. To the extent that they have written instruction about it :
". . .[You must ] accept the words which are offered [you] and give, [do as told] as you have received."
"A major hindrance in. . .learning is . . .[your ] fear about the validity of what [you] hear. And what you hear may be quite startling. . . .Judge not the words that come to you, but . . .[receive] them in confidence."
I, too, am being given information, presently, about a new mate for me - just as you are ! I believe it with all my heart.
Ashlin, listen to me - no matter what we are told - it is best when it concerns a mate for us - to not present to him what you have been told for awhile. Let him get to know you and say nothing - until he shows real interest. It may take awhile. He isn't hearing The Holy Spirit (God) as you are. He doesn't know yet, what you know. He may back off some for awhile if you have spilled the beans to him immediately. It is human nature for people to get frightened of someone "coming on" too strongly - and they don't understand what you know. Leave him be. God will handle it.
I have also been instructed by Jesus that if occasionally my human mind is playing games with me - that it does not matter. He and the Holy Spirit will not allow me to get into trouble with it. The important thing is to just believe what you are hearing and go with it. Do what They say. Most of the time, we will be correct.
Relationship with Jesus and the Holy Spirit and God is a wild ride! More interesting, more exciting, more fun, more safe, more loving - than anything else that exists. It's the only road worth traveling.
Congratulations! I believe with you - a mate has been found for you.

Ashlin,
God answers prayers all the time. Sometimes we doubt what we hear or perceive Him to say because of its' simplicity or ordinariness or complexity. To be able to know a message is of and from God, Christians use discernment.
If you are unfamiliar with discernment hear it is:
it is governed by love, for if it is not, it's worthless (1 Cor 13:1-3);
it centers us onto Jesus the Christ and Lord (1 Cor 12:3), and His good news;
it directs us to Scripture, not away from it (Isaiah 8:19, 20);
it builds up the church and its members (Ephesians 4:11-12), giving it power, wisdom, character, boldness, and unity.
it helps create in us a love of righteousness, a heightened sense of sin, and a turning away from known evil.
A very good explanation can be found at http://www.acts17-11.com/hearing.html
The aim of discernment is to enhance one's participation in the work of God, for the glory of God and the healing of the world. There is no method that guarantees how the Spirit will be discerned because the Holy Spirit can't be captured in a formula. But we can learn ways to practice discernment that help counter self-deception and heighten the possibility that God's Spirit can be known.
These are some verses that help me to understand God's word in terms of discernment.

OK I would stop spending every moment waiting for a sign or listening for a voice. God often "speaks" to us in the smallest ways. Just live each day enjoying your single life. God sent me my mate from over 16 hours away and led him in a path straight to me with lots of Little Miraculous signs. But neither of us saw those signs until we were married and looking back at our lives. I said all that to say this, I could have prayed my heart out and looked my eyes out and I would not have found him one second before I was supposed to because he was so far away. It is in God's own time that He gives us His perfect answer. In the meantime you might be missing so many chances to touch the lives and hearts of others all because you were worrying about whether this guy will like you. Best wishes to you!

I'm coming up on my 30th year of being a Bible believing, "spirit-filled" Christian. There is one important thing that the church is wrong on nowadays: God speaking to people is VERY UNCOMMON.
The Bible teaches this clearly. God did not speak to everyone prior to Christ. He does not change. He does not speak to lots of people today. The church teaching young people that "God will speak to them" is bad doctrine that they will have to repent from (for more on this, read Revelations).
Why do I say this? Because Satan wants you to try and apply your talents in areas that are vain and fruitless. Expecting to hear God's voice is a vain and fruitless activity. For more on this, read "The Screwtape Letters".
Do your research. Discover what you want. Make a calm decision and believe that God will show you lessons FROM your decision --- do NOT believe that God will tell you about the decision before it is made. Learn this now. Your life will be much better for it.
(So, in conclusion, perhaps your resistance to "trust" this "God hearing process" is actually The Holy Spirit telling you "wait a minute, We don't work this way.")

God ain't a dinner theater magician. Only you can ultimately figure out which man is best for you to marry (if at all). Anything else is wishful thinking, which is what your question sounds like, I'm afraid.

God just gave me a messege your to marry me next friday... No honestly follow your heart and let love and wisdom be your guides. I personaly believe that everything happens for a reason so even if you do make a choice you later feel you regret I wouldnt worry about it because it was suppost to happen maybe. Find yourself before you get married tho plz.

I've done the exact same thing with prayer. I think I pray and then get a feeling that I say to myself it must be God confirming what I wanted to happen anyway.
The Bible tells us to be still and know He is the Lord.
I think that means that He will speak to you (and me) in our silence and in our stillness -- as much as He will in our personal chaos and earthly desires. So He will come with an answer when we become still and listen to Him.
The other thing is that He speaks to us in His word. The Bible tells us to marry a believer and not to become yoked to an unbeliever. He tells us that to avoid heartache and pain in the future. That is His small still voice as well -- but it sure is clear.

God speaks to us in a still small voice. YOu know it is Him when you have peace about it. Also, the Bible says the he who finds a wife, finds a good think. Women should not seek, but be sought after.
