In California, I've only seen CHP pull people over on the freeway. If I was speeding and a regular cop, city police, or transportation(e.g. BART) police showed up, should I worry about getting a ticket from them?

Also, has anyone gotten a ticket from city police in this situation?

If the highway runs through the county, then the county would also have jurisdiction there. If it runs through a city, same thing. Some cities have agreements with the highway patrol that they won't run traffic on the highway, though, since it takes the city officers away from routine patrol in the city and might increase response time if they have to come in from the highway.

Depends upon your state's jurisdictional laws. From personal experience, in LA you can be cited by LA City cops, LA County Sheriff's Deputies, and Chippies on the highways. Though I wouldn't think that BART could issue citiations.

Here in MO, some small-town cops are also county deputies and can issue citations outside their normal jurisdiction. Learned that the hard way (but beat the ticket when he didn't show.)

Okay, I urge you to listen to what I am telling you.

Police officers in every state are licensed by that state. Their jurisdiction is the entire state.

How about just following the traffic laws and avoid getting a ticket?

Sure, if it's in their jurisdiction. Lot's of local agencies are just too busy to run traffic on the highway, but they can. Here in Texas, we have county constables who right tickets for traffic offenses.

City police can stop anyone within thier jurisdiction, in general they don't, they stay busy with city roads, but they can if thier department allows it

If you are on a section of highway that runs through their jurisdiction, you bet they can issue you a citation.
