Simply, the person that's goes AWOL is sought after by military police and eventually when caught he or she will have a trial. At that trial it will be decided exactly what the punishment will be (mostly its time in military jail).

It will depend on how long he is AWOL, whether he returns on his own or is caught and returned.

At the least it will be a Captains Mast with some form of punishment.

He does not want to stay away long enough to be classified a Deserter. That will get him serious Brig time and possibly Leavenworth.

If the do it while at sea - they drowned. Actually they throw them into the ship's brigg until they can get to port and then try them for a courtmartial before a naval tribunal. Did you ever see the TV series JAG?
