Aviano is a small city with a famous center for cancer cure and research, as well as the usa afb. Jan will be probably cold and maybe snowy.
Nearby cities: Pordenone, Udine, Trieste, Venezia, Treviso, Padova Verona. All of them are quite interesting to visit, you can find more info by googling them.

Below a map and the infos for the tourist agency in Aviano. You can call/fax them for any info on hotels or weather or anything, it's theyr job and it's free.

I have been to Aviano Italy, but not in January...it will be cold since Aviano is located at the foothill of the Dolomites.
The City itself offers remains of a Castle on a hill nearby, the
Cathedral of San Zenone, the church of St. Gregory,
with a fresco cycle of the Passion of Christ. Nearby is Venice, Pisa and Florence.

One such group is Portal Italy http://groups.yahoo.com/group/portalitaly/
