Well for about $6000 you could probably get a clean, late 90's used Honda Accord with around 120,000 miles or so already on the odometer. It will be a high mileage car, but it will be very reliable and dependable. If the car you choose is maintained right, a Honda could take you well past 300,000 miles.

I would go with a used Civic over a Neon, even if the Civic is a little older or higher mileage
Civic, Accord, Corolla, Lancer, Altima, all probably in the 1999-2002 age range
I would stay away from American cars if at all possible, they seem to be improving but the early 2000's wasnt a good time for them
also the Neon is discontinued completely now and it isnt exactly something I would think would become a collectors item

Mazda Protege will be a better choise tham Neon. I owe one, bought it used for $5000, I had it since 2002 had no problems with it.
I rented dodge neon once, I found it to be inferior to Mazda Protege DX.
Don't buy new car if you're on the budget. You're paying too much just for the fact that it is new. If you were to buy a new car and were to sell it 2 weeks later you'd lose a lot of money. If you were to sell a used car after 2 weeks of ownership you can recover pretty much the same money. This is why I say you're paying too much just for the fact that it's new.

I think you should buy a new car, because if u buy a used car, you wouldn't know how the previous owner treated the car, there might be some problems with the car that u wont see right away and it will come latter on, with a new car you know there wont be a problem with the car for the first two years, so you will save money.

I've been quite happy with my Ford Focus, and they should be in your price range. The Mazda Protege is another good value that holds up well but doesn't hold its resale like a Civic or Corolla, so you can get more car for your money.
