intervention.

you get all of the alcoholic's friends and family in a room, and each of them tells the alcoholic that they've noticed the alcohol abuse, that they're sad and ashamed for the alcoholic, but that they still love the alcoholic and want him/her to get help.

this procedure is designed to break through the alcoholic's self-lies and self-delusions and make the alcoholic realize that there is no way to continue to hide from the fact that he/she has a problem.

You can't push someone to get help for a problem they can't admit they have. Even when they admit to a problem they must do the foot work. You could have an intervention as some have said but it will only help if the person in question knows that there is an issue that they can't fix on their own.
Read the "Big Book" the AA book. There are excellent chapters for friends, employers, family members of addicts and alcoholics. Even go to a couple AA meetings to find out the awesome amount of support is there for both the alcoholic and the people who care for them. Good luck to you and yours.

Very few alcoholics will willingly seek help. You may have to set the example by attending Al-Anon meetings yourself (if age-appropriate for you). Or, you may take him/her to an AA meeting with you. Prepare yourself for quite a battle, though.
If you have a close relationship with the person, you might consider scheduling an appt. with their doctor. Make it an appt. that you may attend, as well. Have the doctor explain the damage that's done to their body. And research a little about the expense of alcoholism/dui arrests. Don't forget to add in the expense of missed work, retribution, attorney costs & the cost of your friendship!

Unfortunately, they won't truly get help until they themselves admit they have a problem and do it the right way.

they have to admit to themselves that they have a problem

then they have to WANT to get help

thats when you search for professionals because if you cant admit you have a problem and then not want help...then theyre not going anywhere...
