So yeah she's told me she quit before but she never really stopped. I know bugging her about it makes it worse but I can't stand to watch herself hurt herself anymore. I hate watching this because she is all i have left. Any ideas of how to help?

It is entirely up to the person who is smoking to quit.

Nothing you say or do will matter.

I smoked for 35 years and watched my father die because of a cigarette habit. I can't count the amount of times I quit just to start back up again. What finally worked for me was hypnosis. I really didn't feel any different when I left the session but it worked! I have not had a cigarette in 4 years and I am soooo happy. Maybe you can suggest the patch or even certain pills help. Please have patience with your mom. Quitting is not an easy road and most people don't quit the first time they try. Good luck!

I highly recommend non-additive cigarettes. Winston or American Spirit. The additives are what make it so hard to quit. I switched to Am Spirit for a couple of months... and then quit, no problem. I smoked for 20 years or so. Quitting had always been really hard for me. I haven't smoked for over two years...

Try and talk her into at least trying them! What you are trying to do is hard, but it is the right thing, so Good Luck!

None of the above tips will work. They will only make her angry, more stressed and therefore more likely to want to smoke. As most people said, there's very little you can do to help her stop so don't push her, just be supportive and she'll apprecitate it.

I know how you feel, my mother died of lung cancer. I can only tell you how people got me to quit smoking. They nagged constantly, took cigarettes out of my pack, broke them in half, told me that the smoke made them sick, and generally were obnoxious. I quit,I think just to shut them up, but it doesn't make any difference why I stopped, it's that I stopped. Good luck with your mom.

sweetie, i have and am still going through this. my dad has been smoking for over 40 years, and he's 63. i think my mom said since he was 17. he's quit so many times i lost count. i did research and presented it to him. i told him how he could suffer if he got lung cancer. i told him how much my mom and i (oh, and my sisters too) need him around and he's smoking himself to an early grave. did he listen? no. he's not gonna listen. same with your mom. i know it hurts, and i know it's frustrating to you. but you have to realize that she's addicted, and when you have an addiction it's a hard habit to break. for your sake and for your mom's sake i hope she's strong enough to kick the habit.

if she said she quit then when find a box a cigarettes laying around though them away and if she asks just say i thought you quit so you wouldn't have any use for them.

Show her pamphets about lung disease and tell her you don't want thisfor her. COPD: Chronic Obsructive Pulmonary Disease is a good start.
