There was a train (The Desert Wind) until May, 1997 when it was withdrawn. It ran from Chicago to Los Angeles via Denver, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.
You can do two things:
1) Take the Amtrak bus to Raton and from there the Southwest Zephyr train (the best way).
6003 Bus
Denver, CO (DEN) 5:55 am
Raton, NM (RAT) 10:25 am 4h 30m
3 Southwest Chief
Raton, NM 10:56 am
Los Angeles, CA
Union Station 8:15 am 22h 19m
2) Take the Amtrak California Zephyr train to Sacramento, and from there a train to Bakersfield and a bus to Los Angeles (more complex, expensive and long trip).
Remeber than earlier than you purchase your ticket, cheaper it is.

The California Zephyr goes to Emoryvile, California and you change trains to the Coast starlight to LA or you can take the Amtrak bus from Denver to Raton, NM and catch the southwest Chief to LA which would be quicker. I prefer riding on the California Zephyr and All of the great scenery trough the Rockies and Nevada along the Truckee river.also the Coast starlight is awesome going down the Pacific coast in some parts of the route. Al tho the Southwest Chief goes through my hometown of Kansas City I prefer to take the Amtrak bus to Omaha an catch the California Zephyr to Jack London Square in Oakland and then on to LA on the Coast Starlight. Sometimes I just go to Emoryville and hang out in the bay area.

Yes, but a long slow way to go. If you get on train in Denver you will travel through Salt Lake City, Utah;Reno,Nevada; Sacramento,Ca.; Stockton,Ca.; Bakersfield,ca. From Bakersfield Amtrak carries you by bus onto Los Angeles. If you are determined to go by rail Amtrak will carry you by bus from Denver to rail line that goes from Chicago, across Missouri,Kansas, the southeastern corner of Colorado on it's way to L.A.. Call Amtrak for schedules. Hope this is helpful.

I don't know where you live in California, but there is a station in Denver. Plane tickets aren't too expensive if you plan ahead of time. I'm flying to Wisconsin from Denver for about $200.
Edit: Looks like you would change trains in NM, but it is possible.
