i have a 1996 and its one of two things you got ya some floating garbage from filling up when the truck was filling the tanks at the station or change your feul filter that i am sure of. The gas thing happened to me just after filling my car at a service station with the hose in the tank

definitly a fuel problem. my guess would be that your fuel injectors are plugged with crap. run a bottle of gumout fuel injector cleaner or a complete fuel system cleaner by lucas or STP. premium fuel wont do crap. runs fine on regular or middle. take it to pepboys they will sort u out
remember to have regular maintainence

definatly fuel related could be debris or even more elusive and hard to track down water could be just a little water trapped in the tank try running it completly empty and see if it gets worse
