I just saw online someone selling teacup chihuahuas for $1200 to $1500. Is that common to sell these pups for that much? They say the dog will be 1.5lb to 2.5lbs as an adult.

there is NO SUCH THING as a teacup chihuahua, a teacup chihuahua is simply the current FAD term for the RUNT of the litter and due to the current trend of the tinier the better its become a puppy millers, petshops and backyard breeders quick ticket to a whole lot of cash, take the smallest (usually weakest and sickest) puppy in a litter, advertise it as "teacup" and make thousands, that being said the average asking price for a NONE STANDARD chihuahua is between $1500 and $5000, take not that chihuhua cannot be show (too small) cannot be bred (too small) and is likely to have a large number of health problems!
dont fall for the hype buy a chihuahua from a responsible breeder, anyone that uses the word teacup, tiny toy, ect is NOT repuatable!
a tiny puppy from a repuatable breeder will likley cost you $800-$1500, however they will not let it go home untill aprox 12 weeks of age, on a spay/neuter contract only and youll have to prove to them first you know about hypoglycemia, luxating patella, open font, retained teeth, the dangers of anesthesia, ect.

theres only 1 chihuahua, by breed standard it can weigh anything from 3-6 lbs and be able to be shown, very small chis and very large chis are unfortunatly common and usually the result of bad breeding practices.

Oh and MANY of the places selling "teacup" chihuahuas gain tiny puppies by using malnourished mothers, very young males and female and malnourishing puppies to stunt growth.
also its VERY difficult to tell how big a chihuahua will be full grown, most dont stick to the weight chart, and 95% of "teacup" chihuahuas end up being 4-6 lbs full grown...yes that $2000 "TEACUP" chihuahua is now the same size as your frineds normal one that cost her $500...

There is no such breed as a teacup chihuahua. Chihuahuas are a toy breed period, whether they weigh 2 lb or 15 lb. A breeder cannot predict the adult size of a Chihuahua. The best they can do is an educated guess. There are very few Chihuahuas that weigh less than 3 lb and most of them are unhealthy. There is a website that sells chihuahuas for up to $14, 850 just because she sold Tinkerbelle to Paris Hilton.

There actually isn't a teacup classification for Chis. If the breeder actually classified them as such do not buy from them. There are Chis that are smaller than normal and they are expensive but anyone who doesn't know enough about the breed that they advertise like that isn't a reputable breeder.

"Teacup" is just a catch word that irresponsible breeders use to make their sickly runt puppies sell faster. Breeding dogs to be under the breed standard of size is not good. They will breed runts to runts and often produce sick dogs with genetic problems. They also endanger the life of the female because they are too small to safely give birth.
