First, there are several options for overhauling or rebuilding an aircraft piston engine. In an overhaul, parts are inspected and may be reused as long as they are within manufacturer's tolerances. The engine continues with the original log book, and continues to build time from when new.
A top overhaul, which replaces or rebuilds only the top half of the engine (cylinders, valves, pistons) is the least expensive, and can run from $2500 to $5000 for a four-cylinder engine, such as the O-320 in a C-172. A complete overhaul, where the engine cases are split and the bottom half of the engine is also rebuilt can run $10-15K, depending on how many parts need to be replaced. All engine repairs must be done by an FAA licensed powerplant mechanic, or by an authorized engine repair station.
A rebuilt or re-manufactured engine is one where all internal parts are replaced with new or brought up to new specs, and the engine is given a new logbook and zero time. In effect, it's a new engine. An engine reman, can run over $20,000, but you get a zero-time engine for the cost. This procedure can only be done by a licensed repair station, or by the original engine manufacturer.

You do not want to dead stick the aircraft into a hard object. Pay a certified aircraft repair shop what they want. Almost all moving parts have to be crack free and X-ray inspected so it is not cheep to do a Lycoming or Continental six cyl aircraft motor. More than this auto tech would undertake. Undertaker that is a funny!

If the cost in truth approaches the $18,000 figure, consider a new engine.
