What I've always used on my Rott puppies and puppies in my classes is holding onto the lower jaw and sticking your thumb in their mouth over the arch of the tongue causing the gag reflex while saying "no bite" they hate this. Also no playing tug-of-war or any biting games.

"If it is a pit bull and already has a biting problem, get rid of it now! That bread of dog has a killer instinct. When they bite someone, their jaw locks and they do not let go. My neighbors had pit bulls and they attacked each other one day. They could not get the dog to let go of the other dog's neck. One of their dogs also killed my cat. These dogs are especially dangerous around children. Everyone who has these dogs always say, "My dog would never hurt anyone." But you can not say this because it is an instinct not a character trait. "
Where did you become educated about this breed? You don't know what you are talking about.
First of all, training a puppy to do anything takes a little time and patience. Pit Bulls have the ability, like any other breed, to be good or bad dogs. It depends on how they are treated and raised. Any dog that is not properly socialized with people or other dogs, and/or is abused ( not that you are abusing ), can be aggressive. Most dog attacks are committed by the small breeds, Chihuahuas, min pins, poodles, etc.
When your puppy starts to bite, tell it no firmly and replace your hand/foot/whatever with an appropriate toy, then encourage biting on that. Some dogs you can not play games with it's mouth (i.e. grabbing it's muzzle, shaking it's head from side to side ), they just get the wrong picture. Be gentle and patient and your puppy will be a very well behaved dog.

Um, I have two pits and I have not had a biting problem with either of them. You perhaps have a rambuncious puppy who plays too much and too hard.
I would probably strike his nose with my hand only (don't hurt or abuse him, only to get his attention that you don't like what he is doing) and tell him, "NO BITING!" Make him sit down and be still. Buy him a nylabone to chew on, they love those.
This breed of dogs is excellent with children. They are very loyal dogs and if they are raised right and socialized properly, they are great in a family setting. They are people friendly, may be aggressive towards other dogs they are not raised with but so are other breeds. There are all kinds of breeds (if not all of them) who do not particularly care of other dogs. That is a natual trait in the dog species.
Break him from biting now while he is young. He is a puppy so he is only playing. He does not think for a moment that he is hurting with his type of play. Take him for walks because pits have alot of energy and they need an out to burn it off. Dailey walks and a nylabone is probably all he need to calm down some.
Don't buy into the negative comments that people, who have never owned a pitbull but listen and believe every negative story that is told, has to say. They are great dogs who need love, affection and positive stern discipline. They should never be chained or tied up. They make very good house pets and they are not destructive to furniture.
Good Luck!

you are on the right track! giving him a chew is a good tactic, because puppies have a physiological NEED to chew, it's not just something they like, they have to do it.
the part you are missing is the communication. dogs don't speak english (at least not without a lot of training) so we have to tell them in a way they understand. you can still say "no biting" but at the same time you need to give him a physical signal that you want him to stop. here's how to do it:
when he bites you, grab his scruff (the loose skin on the back of his neck) with one hand and close his mouth with the other hand and say "no bite" in a firm but calm tone of voice. DO NOT scare him or hurt him. this is simply a way to communicate with him.
keep his mouth closed for a few seconds (count to 3 or 4) then let him go and keep your hands near his face. if he bites you again, scruff him and close his mouth for a count of 5. again release him and keep your hands near him. do this as many times as it takes- gradually increasing the time you hold his mouth closed- until he stops biting when you let him go.
when you let him go and he DOESN'T bite you, PRAISE him!!! let him know he's the best puppy in the world. then give him a chew.
do this every time he bites you, and he will stop biting. it sometimes takes a few weeks, but it works!
good luck!

When puppies are playing with each other and one plays too rough or bites too hard, the other puppy will yelp ("Yipe!") to let him know that it hurt.
To teach a puppy to stop biting you need do the same thing. Next time he bites you, let out a loud, high-pitched "Yipe!", yank your hand away, and turn your back to him. Don't play with him again until he calms down (he'll try and engage you right away; keep your back to him). Once he's calm, try playing again.
It took our pit about a week or two to get it, but pretty soon he stopped biting all together.
Good luck!

Make sure you do not play with him when he bites you. Say NO firmly give him what you want him to chew, Sqeal Ooch like a pup would and don't play with him. PUPs understand dog language. This is why pups should stay with littermates as long as possible. Pits a good 9 weeks.

when he bites you on the hand take your fingers and cup them around his snout....but not his nose. Make sure the skin overlaps his sharp teeth and gently squeeze. He will then understand what it feels like to be bitten and eventually stop. You will know that this is effective if you hear him whimper. When you hear him whine, then tell him "NO BITE", and let go of his snout...I don't consider this mean, its used by many people to cure their dogs of biting. Plus it doesn't take long for him to realize it hurts and not to do it anymore.

first of all,all dogs have a killer instinct it's in their nature so dont listen to the people that say to get rid of it.Secondly all dogs bite that's how they play.Dont bother sayin no firmly their dogs, not people.when he bites you make your hand form into like a claw and tap your dog with it that way it knows ur the dominant one or the pack leader/and your dog is biting cause it has nothin else to do and it wants to use its energy that's why u need to walk it for an hour and get it tired.it works believe me

the same way you teach a child you bite it back . when the puppy bites your hand you probably react in a way that the puppy thinks in entertaining. you have to show the dog what it fells like every time it bites you . this is how it understands it is hurting you . they don't speak and are to young to understand your commands as a puppy
