My cats eyes is swollen w/discharge and is not eating or drinking, it was a stray that i got about a week ago and seemed fine. I took to vet and they gave me antibiotics to give, plus meat flavored baby food to eat..was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions. Vet wanted to keep overnight, but I am unsure if I am going to keep and dont want to have that expense and seem all no kill shelters in MD are not accepting cats right now...any help would be greatly appreciated..

The eye problem can be from a virus or an injury. If he is not eating, he may have a virus and doesn't feel well. Cat's don't eat well when they have a cold. Try canned food warmed up in the microwave a bit...they can smell warm food better and if they can smell it, they're more likely to eat it. If he's not drinking, he's going to become dehydrated. Can your vet give him some SubQ (under the skin) fluids? It would make him feel a lot better. You may have to hand feed him to encourage his appetite.

Well, a few weeks ago we found an abandoned dog, so we brought it home. She got in the room with the cats and attacked one of them - he had a few puncture holes and major bruising on his stomach. Everytime we touched him, he would meow, hide under the bed, not eat or drink for a day or two, and didn't use the litter box (he didn't need to). He started eating about 4 days later, used the litter box, etc. He still hides more than normal, but he doesn't hurt to touch him. He's more skittish, but he purrs when you hold him again. The medication might make him drowsy, not hungry which in turn means he doesn't need to pass urine. The stench thing bothers me though. You might want to take him to another vet if he doesn't start looking better in a day or two. Regular check ups are about $60, so whatever that is along with x-rays and medication. Do you still have the x-rays? If so, bring them to the other vet, if not ask for them at your vet to at least save that cost. Good luck! I hope he feels better - you might want to keep him in the house from now on. The outside world is a dangerous place for cats.

What did the Vet say was wrong with the cat? Is it just an eye infection? I have cats so naturally my answer to you would be keep the cat. But I do understand what you are saying.
Thank You for being so kind as to take in a stray and then take him/her to the Vet.. Kudos to you.
I guess my advice would be if it is just an infection and nothing else then maybe you should either keep the cat or try to find a good home for him/her.

Poor strays are subjected to a very tough life. You are very big-hearted to take care of this abandoned creature.

Keep up with the baby food and do try to switch to a regular wet cat food as soon as you can. Cats have to have taurine in their diets. Taurine is added to all cat food and the baby food does not have any.

Make sure to give him the antibiotic for the full ten days. It's a drag and those darn bottles seem to go on forever.

I hope he purrs his way into your heart so he can have a good home.

Give the meds time to work.
Try using a baby's medicine shooter to give her water. Mix the food with water until it is liquid and squirt it in her mouth with the medicine shooter.
It will keep her energy up until she feels well enough to eat on her own.
If you really can't take care of her, the best thing for her is to go to animal control or the SPCA. They don't automatically kill kittens. They give them a long time to find homes and she needs care and treatment.

There is this stuff called boric eyewash, you can get it at a pharmacy (it is not expensive). Mix the eyewash in half with distilled water and use a clean cotton ball to wash all the crust from the cats eyes as often as necessary. It will help the antibiotic to do its job. As with any living thing that is sick give it lots of love and be patient. I hope your cat gets better. Peace to you.

Could be herpes...ask the vet about adding L-Lysine to kitty's food.
