I am cursed with depression (genetics). I have vowed to not take anything if I don't have to. I just take walks or spend time by myself doing crafts or such. It is hard....sometimes harder more than most, but I do it. But, but why do you not want to be medicated?

It depends on how deep your depression is.
Medication helped me over a rough patch a few years back; sometimes that's all that is needed, but you should really see a doctor to rule out underlying causes.
One thing you might try is to keep a calendar of your "bad" days and "good" days. Sometimes, we overestimate how unhappy (depressed) we feel. Many females coping with PMS have a rhythm to their unhappy days. Record how you're feeling for a few months - write down, perhaps, the best and worst thing that happens each day, or simply smiley or sad faces indicating how you felt that day. There may be a pattern.
How to be happy. Try making others around you happy. After all, it is much better to give than to receive.

Keep yourself busy doing things you like. The more you can stay busy, the less you will focus on your depression. But if it doesn't go away, the best bet is to see a doctor. He can put you on medication, and you won't have to take it forever, just long enough to get you back in the routine of daily life. Good Luck!

Exersise does help (I've seen that answer) because of the natural endorphines, but I have struggled with depression for years and simply put, I deal with it by not caring what others think of me. I have become apathy girl and am proud of it. I do things that make me happy and don't stress about things that don't matter.
Don't mean to sound preachy, but religion also helped me too... it helps some and can be a real source of hope.

I have problems with depression also. I find that I feel so much better after I exercise. It's so hard to get myself up to do it because of the depression, but once I do I just feel so great. Way better than before. Just find some physical activity you enjoy and start going at it! Even if you have to fight with yourself at first.

Step 1 is to realize that crappy things happen to everybody, and medication is not always the answer. Step 2 is to realize that the best you can do is deal with the situations as they're handed to you. Yes, sometimes they suck, but do the best you can with them and realize that "this too shall pass."

Vigorous exercise will make your brain release serotonin and that will make you feel better. It will take a while for this to happen but you will feel much better over the course of several weeks.
