from 2004 till now i have gained about 200 pounds! i've been to the doctor and he looks at me like "yeah right" - seems like the phrase "fat, lazy cow" runs through his mind. i eat a pretty balanced diet, may splurge on pizza once a month or so - but i eat fresh fruits and veggies and lean protein. i drink plenty of water daily. my weight gain has really hindered my ability to "work-out", my knees creak and crack like you wouldn't beleive........but i haven't done anything different than i have my whole life, but the weight just keeps comming. what should i do? i can't get a second opinion b/c i don't have health coverage and i go to the free-clinic..and i've seen the doctor there - the one that tells me i should get up and "do" something...i tell you, i do more in a day than he does i bet.............any advice?

Since your doctor isn't taking your concerns seriously and you can't get another doc, I would suggest you keep a log of what exercise you do (type and how long) and everything you eat every day (what and how much...calorie total if you want) for a couple of weeks before you go back to see him. You may be eating more than you realize. If you are NOT overeating, you can show your log to your doctor and tell him to point out what you are doing wrong. He will either be better able to advise you or he will realize that there is something else wrong and do some test to find out if it is thyroid or something like that.

First thing...get a new doctor (go to another free clinic) and get your thyroid checked!!! NO ONE should be treated like that, especially by a doctor!! Your doctor should be trying to help you. This is a serious health issue.
If your thyroid is running slow it slows down your metabolism greatly. This can cause excessive weight gain. All you have to have done is a simple blood test (fasting is required I think) and they can detect how well your thyroid is functioning.
Also, are you on any sort of medication? That can alter body chemicals and cause weight gain. It sounds like you're eating well. You may just have to count calories, or follow a 'system' that works.
As for exercise, you should try something easier on the joints such as swimming. If you do not have a pool of your own, and are uncomfortable going to a public pool, try going early in the morning when there aren't a lot of people around. You'll get a great workout that's not hard on the joints.
If it becomes a greater health issue, I would consider more drastic weight loss measures such as seeing a bariatric surgeon. But try some of the things that people have suggested here because it's a really good start!

Obviously because you just keep gaining weight... though you seem to be working very hard, it's not hard enough. Unfortunatly, some people just have to work harder because of slower metabolisms and things like that. I'm on a new diet where i eat nothing but fruit and veggies till lunch time, and no processed foods. So, basically nothing that comes in a box from some company. I like to cook so it's easy for me. I've also been working out 5 days a week and I've lost 14 pound in 2 months on this diet.

When you work out you have to keep it up. Your stretching your muscles when you do this which means if you stop your more likely to gain more weight. Also you need to cut down on the fatty foods. Choose food with little or no calories. Cut back on the sweets as well. You should only be eating 3 meals a day. 3 full meals. But stop eating when you get full. Try to not eat snacks. Drink something instead. Plus cut back on the carbonated drinks. Diet drinks don't work and are bad for your body.

Try and do some weight-lifting if you don't already, because muscle burns more than fat and that will really really help. What sort of cardio do you do? Maybe you aren't getting your heart rate up enough, try doing a variety of things that you are able to do that will get your heart pumping more and then do weights in between. It sounds like your diet is good, but maybe you are eating too big of portions? Eating healthy foods is great but you still have to watch how much of each thing you eat. Try keeping a daily food journal to figure out if you're really eating well. Good luck!

Good carbs like celery and carrots will never make you fat. Bad carbs like cake will, but you don't need to know the whole science of glycemic index and load. It is mostly NOT your fault, if you need to lose weight. The way we have been taught to eat is responsible for making obesity the number one health problem in the world (according to Atlantic Monthly magazine) replacing hunger and infectious disease. You need to re-learn how to eat so you can become thin. Not a diet, but diet lifestyle.
Find out about fastest way to lose weight, gradual ways to lose weight, most effective exercise, good and bad carbs and anti-water. Lose bodyfat and retained water which also makes you a lot fatter (bloated). Links page has gov. BMI calculater to find out just how much overweight you are. Most important-- make sure to read the last "fat loss tip", first before anything else, to see the number one food that causes Americans to be fat.

You need to burn more calories each day than you are taking in... you need to do that two ways.... put down the fork (and that includes, picking up a slice of pizza with your fingers).... step away from the table.... go for a walk... and walk.... and walk....
don't just mosey down the street, stopping to look at every flower and puppy.... walk! Walk like you've got to get someplace, and you are late... get a move on... get goin' no stopping for nothin'
Machines don't do anything other than help tone your muscles... you won't lose any weight building muscle... you lose weight by burning it off with aerobic exercise... and the easiest way to do that is to get up from the table, and walk. Walk for at least an hour a day... every day... break into a sweat if you can... and keep walking.
You're eating lots of fruits and vegetables? Good... and what about fats? What about those sneaky "Trans Fats" that are hiding in every damned thing you think has no fats in them at all?
Do yourself a favor... look up Trans Fats on the internet... Those partially hydrogenated oils that have snuck into every damned cracker... cookie.... frozen pizza crust... (Woops... did I say Pizza again? Sorry....) Trans Fats are hiding everywhere... you need to get them the hell out of your house, and out of your life.
And don't reward yourself for being such a good girl and going for a walk, by giving yourself a bowl of ice cream. Throw out that "Diet Soda" and have a glass of water.

Good for you for working out and not giving up.
It does come down to math.. If youre gaining weight, you are eating more caloroies than you're burning. Even fruit has calories. Continue eating healthy and try not to eat things that spike your blood sugar and make you hungry sooner. Just eat less, and dont eat close to bed time. Good luck!
I'm not a doctor, this is not medical advice.

try a simple experiment. monday morning step on the scale. then plan out an exact 1200 calorie diet. stick to it without fail...put it in writing so there's no mistake. do it monday through friday. be certain to include a good 3 mile walk every day. saturday morning, step on the scale again, and compare your weight to monday. if it's lower, do the plan all over again next week, and so on. if it's higher, bring that information to a medical practitioner and request that appropriate tests be taken to see if there is an imbalance somewhere. good luck.

certain medicines can cause weight gain, I think. Also, if you eat any foods regularly that are bad for you, stop eating them. Even things like peanuts can be bad for you in large amounts. If all else fails, you may want to look into gastric bypass surgery to prevent health risks. Hope this helps, and good luck.
