When I finally woke up, my neck was hurting,as well as my chest.
Im really scared to go back to sleep, Ive been up since 6 oclock am. This used to happen when I was younger, now im 23 and its starting again. Could it have any thing to do with the stressful Calc final yesterday? Id really appreciate the tips and advice. THANKS

Like the person above stated...
It's sleep paralysis, usually it is a charactersitic of REM sleep. It is a protective mechanism, since during REM sleep we dream, so it's what keeps us from not performing the actual actions in dreams, such as walking, jumping, running or other weird things and movements we're doing in our dreams...

If you are becoming aware of it...what's causing it is one of two reasons:

- you woke up or got awaken abruptly and were in a REM phase so your body didnt have time to realize you were awake...
-stress

So...in conclusion, blame the cal exam...exams always gave me f*cked up sleep...and were you consumming alot of caffeine? That just adds to it..

That is so weird. The same thing happened to me today except I had an out of body experience before I came back to my body and realized I was sort of parilyzed. Go to my question and read my details and the answers that I got:
Guys, I had an out-of-body experience a few hours ago...I'm a little freaked. Have you had one?????

Someone gave me this link and it would help you more than me:

Calculus seems like the kind of final that could do that to someone. I hope you did well on it; and I hope you and I stop freaking out so we can get some sleep tonight.

During REM sleep your brain paralyzes your body (so you don't hurt yourself when dreaming) Sometimes you wake up so fast the paralysis has not worn off yet and you are aware of what's going on. Not to worry it will go away, may be stress related no one knows for sure

Oh, I hate when that happens. I do that too. I noticed I do that when I am really tired or I have slept too much. You are awake but can't move, right? You are totally aware of your surroundings and yet, you are completely unable to move. You can even look around in some instances and yet, you cannot wake yourself. I HATE that. I think it's scary. It happens to me too!

I awake often like that and usually don't rise but i go to my knees first. After a few minutes I feel better and I get up. I haven't realized it was an illness. Maybe it is just me.

your having an outer body experience. your neck hurts b/c you are trying to get back in so fast. Just convince yourself if it happens again it will be more gentle. But it cant hurt you so don't worry
