The dentist will have to make a recommendation, depending on several factors in your situation. The "premium" crowns are all nice and, if they are appropriate, you will be really happy with the results - assuming the dentist is skilled and uses them correctly. Ask about Captek, Empress and Procera. These are the big name brands and there are several other techniques that are extremely similar, so if the dentist says, "I have something that's just like Captek..." you are not getting the old bait and switch shuffle. There are just many out there.
The preparation demands of these particular crowns is very demanding and I charge accordingly. These three types of crowns are $950 in my office and that's probably about the national average for Captek, Empress or Procera. They are somewhat higher than traditional porcelain-fused-to-gold crowns.
If it was my own personal teeth and they had enough structure to work with properly, I would choose Empress and have it placed with a bonding resin cement. These can look absolutely beautiful - extremely natural - and the porcelain is very compatible with the opposing teeth as far as wear rates.

Ask your dentist if you can have an all porcelain crown. They can look just like your other teeth. If says that you have too tight of a bite than get a "Captek" style crown. Whatever you do, don't let them put a PFM crown on a front tooth. You won't be happy with it years down the road when you get a gray line on your gum.

i have a captek crown. gold on the inside, natural looking on the outside and prevents black lines from forming, etc.
http://www.captek.com/new_captek/
by the way, ur tooth will not be the same if it's crowned...little more sensitive to cold and extreme pressure. i hate crowns in general, but i guess as crowns go, i'm satisfied with mine (been over 2 years)...it does look natural...no major problems, no black line but the gumline area does look different from my natural teeth (not bad though...black would make it look rotten). the first 2 weeks, my tooth felt funny (i think it's because of the glue), but it eventually went away. although i will say, if all ur teeth start yellowing, then the crowned tooth will stand out. i don't drink much coffee nor do i smoke, so i don't have that problem.
do what u can to prevent having any more crowns...like keeping ur teeth clean for the majority of the day (> or =60% counting the time u r asleep) as much as possible. and never sleep without cleaning them (flossing + brushing).
whatever u pick just keep in mind that u can't just upgrade crowns without going thru a lot of trouble/pain...they cement them down so to change crowns, u need to ground them away.
also, the other thing that got to me was they ground away like half my tooth before putting on the crown...it was so stumpy! i was shocked and a little sad.

If the teeth wil show when you smile, get porcelain crowns. They will grind down the tooth so the crown can fit over it without being bigger than the other teeth. The cost depends on the area of the country .

Get all porcelain crowns. Please dont let them do a porcelain fused to non-precious metal. I know that probably doesnt make sense to you, but trust me, they look horrible and dont last as long as the more expensive ones. We do the Empress like Dr Sam was talking about and they are $950.00. They will remove about 2mm of tooth structure for the crown to fit onto the tooth.

Gold is better but maybe too flashy for a front tooth. Porcelain crowns can't be distinguished from real teeth, and are almost as good as gold. It doesn't hurt too much, but it is expensive. Ask your dentist.

hi...there's one thing i didn't see in your answers and that is....my dentist asked me if i wanted the back of the crown white.....or the metal color.....white is more expensive...i got that only because i wanted my whole mouth white.....i had everything done...but the whole crown white wasn't any whiter than the dark back (he said it would be whiter...) and one other thing i wish i had done...and that was get a shade lighter than my natural teeth when they do the match....i would get my real teeth as white as i could before they do the matching.....because that is the real color and you want that.....mine were stained and they matched that.....and there's no way to get them white again..porcelain crowns can't be bleached or whitened....so now when i use crest strips...they lighten my real teeth..but not the crowns....well there's more suggestions.....you must be overloaded....you'll love them though...good luck! the all white teeth do last longer....

When my crown was put on the doc drilled my tooth down to a nub (just enough to attach the crown to).........They don't hurt but sometimes mine is sensitive for a second to hot or cold.........Porcelain crowns are the most practical, unless you want a grill.............LOL........Take care..............

porcelain. Getting a crown is not painful, though there is some discomfort in the drilling and shaping.
