There are really no proven way to prevent Alzheimer. But I remember I read somewhere that if you keep your brain stimulated like reading, and eat healthy, it will prevent you from having Alzheimer.

It's partially genetic, so if you've got someone in your family with it, be watchful in yourself. The quicker you're diagnosed, the better and longer the medications will work. But right now it is still ultimately fatal--it just takes a long time.
Supposedly eating a healthy diet, exercising and keeping your mind active are all important ways to stave it off if it's in your future. I know my dad started showing symptoms when he retired and became a crossing guard--went from interacting with people all day, filling out paperwork, etc to standing on a corner with a sign.
As far as "treating" it goes, all the medications that are out there now only treat the symptoms. Doctors are working hard to find the CAUSE--right now no one really knows how all the symptoms go together. Does the plaque cause the disease or the disease the plaque? That seems to be the focus. My dad in in a study at Yale University where they are trying to remove the plaque and prevent more from forming; they are also testing the DNA of all the afflicted in the study to try to find a link there.

Drink water, water water!!!
I am not a doctor, but have some experience in non-medical treatments. While it won't necessarily stop the progress of Alzheimers, water is a key ingredient to proper brain function, no matter what the age. It may slow the deterioration of memory. 8 glasses a day (which you may have heard) is 2 liters (quarts). It may seem like a lot, but it improves brain function and memory. Just because you are not thirsty, doesn't mean you do not need water.
Also, do your own research on Natural Factors PS IQ - a natural supplement of phosphatidylerine (PS) and other essential oils. I use it and it really works. Consult a doctor of natural medicine for more info. Hope this will help. bfg

Alzheimer's is neurodegenerative disease. Some ways to reduce the risk of acquiring include stimulating the mind (by means of games [chess / wordgames]), interaction with people, regular exercise, low cholesterol diets with Vitamin B and Omega 3 fatty acids. Drugs called AChE inhibitors moderate symptoms as well as NMDA antagonists. This is a very thorough topic. I suggest asking a doctor or do further research. This site has alot of info:

Eat your blue berries, I forget which vitamin it has a lot of that helps the brain stay sharp. Also, continue to learn through out your life. Anything to keep your brain heathy and active. My grandmother suffered from demintia... its a rough thing on everybody as I'm sure you know.

Avoid head trauma and noise pollution. Not much you can do if it's genetic which i think it is but not sure.
