Our adult son has lost the use of his left arm. He loved rock fishing but to date we have not been able to find a suitable rod, reel and tackle so he can continue this sport. A couple of sporting stores have looked into this for us but to date no-one has been successful. It is his 30th birthday in a month and we would love to be able to put this pleasurable past-time back within his reach.

You could make a portable holder that would support the handel of the rod and somwhere closer to the middle of the rod. Then get him a rod set up with a Zebco 202(? if they still make them) or a Zebco 303. Good simple reels one handed operation. ( those are the ones you see on kiddie poles, they are designed for easy use) Sorry to hear the news, but what you are doing is wonderfull. The support you have for him is amazing, and the fact you want to get him back to something he loves will help with his recovery and mindset.

I found these two websites that both offer similar products. You might also want to look into another type of reel that may be easier to operate. Spincasting reels would work because they simply have a "trigger" that is depressed to release the line. He might find that easier. As for the tackle, I don't think that any one lure or bait is easier to manipulate onto the line. Maybe a good solution would be to "pre-bait" the lures onto leaders, so he could use one hand to release the swivel and simply place the new lure and leader onto the line. Rock fishing is inherently dangerous as is, but maybe he could find a fishing hole that would allow him to more or less drop a line in rather then have to rely solely on casting to place his line. Best of luck!

I don't see how he could reel it in, he would need to find some type of apparatus to lock the pole into place after casting.
