Why is it that religions, which are supposed to be abt love create so much anger and bring out so much ugliness?

I was asked this question earlier by someone and I really couldn't answer it. I didn't really think that religion brought out ugliness in people but I'm not sure now. Could you give me your thoughts on this or any answer you may have to this?

I would like to add that I am not asking this question to put anyone down. Someone wrote that I was stereotyping Christians and I'm not. I was asked this question and I couldn't find the answer. I'm not putting anyone down.

which group or religion are you talking about? What are they doing that is causing you to feel angry? What are they or one of them doing specificaly that causes you to want to be ugly? It sounds like you are saying that you are feeling anger and ugliness towards "religions," ....whatever religion means to you. I could say I am angry at baseball players and they are making me act ugly. I am the one who is angry and ugly....not the baseball players.
Some people today and I'm not saying you because I don't know why you are angry and wanting to be ugly to this person or persons or what it is that is being done....some people do not wish to "retain God in their mind." If a certain person or group represents God to you, the God of the Bible this may be the cause of the anger. But I would have to ask you exactly what is happening when you are angry.
Just like other groups of people, there is much diversity among religious. There are some I love dearly and some I want to avoid like the "plague." If I meet a highly "feminist" Catholic that doesn't believe in many of the doctrines of her faith and has affairs with men and I as a christian who has become her friend and she mine and I start to talk to her about my faith in Jesus Christ she might become very angry because my faith might threaten her lifestyle. She may not want to feel guilty about her lifestyle. I have not been hateful to her. This is an example out of my experience. The friendship was lost and this made me very sad. I truly valued her friendship. She was a wonderful person.
I hope something I've said helps.
Peace and Love,
Cathy

Unfortunately, it seems to be human nature to take whatever good stuff we're given and ruin it.

The roots of every religion seem to go back to some really good ideas. But then we institutionalize them, they become about power, they become involved in politics, they build on what's worst about humanity rather than what's the best. It's how Christianity goes from turning the other cheek to the Crusades.

There are some really good ideas out there. I've read the Bible, exerpts from the Koran, parts of the Tao te Ching, and quite a bit of the Bahvata Gita (I apologize for any misspellings). When we take these good ideas and make them a source of human power, the good ideas get lost in the politics.

By the way, that's why we should separate church and state.

Thanks for the question. It's one that should be on the top of all of our minds.

Oh yeah, I didn't think you were stereotyping Christians at all. If someone accused you of that, maybe they have a guilty conscience...
I'm a Christian and I wasn't offended by your question at all.

Ugliness and Anger is not part of the religions. People who truly follow the true religion can control their ugliness. Ugliness has always been part of the world. Some use religion as their cause, some use terrorism as the cause, some make ugliness because they're simply racist. But the right people are those who show good manners and fight for justice.

well you apparently sparked an interest by so many responses. bottom line is what has been repeated so many times in the response. Religion is man made not God made. however, it plays its part just like the ten commandments. To dismiss it entirely would be a mistake. It is often the boundries and guidelines people need. If you think about it most true religions, not wacked out people with excuses, have a common thread. To bring people to a higher standing by displaying traits the produce goodness in ourselves as well as others.

Many people and groups use their religion as a means to gain power and influence. People can gain a measure of pride or a feeling of control from their beliefs. Religion is not only about love, it is about truth. When people become convinced that their way is truth and all others are devils, this leads to problems. These problems tend to be what we see on the news. We don't usually see the positive good that religion produces for many people.

Religion is another man-made tool used to control the masses for political gain. Look at the world around us...Is there a single war going on that is not SOMEHOW fueled by religion?? I believe in a personal spiritual path and a Higher Power which is individual to all. Religion? I don't fall for that anymore. The evidence is too great.

To start with, religion does NOT cause anger or ugliness... But religion will not send you to heaven either. Religion was started because of different beliefs

My God is NOT a mincer of these emotions.

Satan will do EVERY THING to get people to turn from GOD and do his bidding, hence the wars, hatred, sins, confusion, etc....

Religion will send you to hell. It is taught in the bible that we are to love everyone as He loves us. There is supposed to be NO hate or ugliness in our world.

Satan is very smart, how else could he get all those thousands of angles to follow him into destruction by defying GOD. Satan will cause confusion, sin, wars, ugliness, murder, and anything else that will cause those seeking GOD to be confused about what is reality.

People have a something God did not give to His angles in heaven, choice.. Use it wisely.

GOD BLESS YOU!!!!

the one that brings out so much hate is the muslim religion. and its just a radical few who are using it to there own agenda. Rite now the president of Iran who by the way is being told what to do by the clerics is spouting off about the destruction of Israiel and the other free nations of the west. which we here in the states are part of . People should pay attention to what is going on in the world and be prepared for the next world war becacuse it has already begun. just starrt paying attention and u will be able to come to your own conclusions. Its serious times we live in and we need serious people who are not afraid to do what is nessecary to protect us and keep us safe from these radical idiots. who want nothing but tyo kill us.

It is not the religion in and of itself..although if Islam is telling their men to commit terrorist acts and murder all who don't believe in Allah, maybe I'm wrong about that one.

Ugliness is within the heart. A person can believe whatever and still be able to relate to others with dignity and respect. It's not the "religions" fault...its at the core of the particular person who is behaving in an angry or "ugly" manner.

This is what i noticed at first, before i left church. There were much greater chances that an unbeleiver was more friendly than a beleiver. Also, the more the beleiver the less tolerant. It was many years later, alot of prayer, and much struggle and I finally left christianity altogether.
I would prefer to build good character, be tolerant, kind, and wise.
if you are christian, then i would say, stick to love, tolerance, kindness, truth, wisdom.... and it wont be too long until you leave it altogether also. and become a free thinker.
:)
