There could be a medical reason for this sudden change. Call your vet and schedule an exam for your Rott. Try to arrange the appointment for a time when your dog has not urinated for a few hours. This will help to ensure he has some urine in his bladder in case the vet wants to run a urinalysis.

Ok you have alot of good ideas from the people ahead of me. I too have a rottie. The breed is not the issue but they are stubborn. The peeing thing could be from infection to attitude.
I would walk my dog before I leave for anyplace. Then take away any water supply. Try this first, then if that isn't enough then crate train him. At 4 years old he will be defiant. The key word is crate TRAIN him. Don't use it as a punishment. Every time you put him in there praise him. Never get mad and put him in there.
I would like to go back to the later issue possible infection. He could have one. Unless he is constantly licking himself and it is raw looking then no infection. He may also have an over active bladder. But I too would rule this out. Just because of the fact that he only does it when you leave. That tells me its behavior related. It could be anxiety. But walk then remove all water. And leave him with some comfort toys to chew on. I would crate as a last resort.

Has he been left alone before without peeing?
There may have been some kind of commotion outside that coincidentally scared him while you were gone.
A crate would be a great idea. Stuff a Kong toy or sterilized real bone with some of his food and a little cheese or peanut butter. The only time he gets this treat is when he's in his crate! It is a big deal to him, so the crate will seem like a wonderful place, and since the only thing he needs to 'guard is his crate, his anxiety will be greatly reduced. He'll also be so focused on the chewie, time will fly and you'll be home already!
Best wishes

I love Rotties and the problem may be caused by the fact that he actually hates to be left alone.
I had a Rottie who did this (among other things) when he was left alone. It seems he did it out of spite or something.
It can also be anxiety. Making him stop peeing in the house is more of a training issue. You can get some books or do a search online where experts can answer your question.

There could be many reasons, so lets start with the simplest first. Perhaps one time that he was left alone, he had to go and went, now regardless of how you cleaned it he can still smell it, and continues to go around that area? If this is the case the only thing that will eliminate the smell to him, are those urine eliminator products from pet stores, or you can make it yourself at home with water, soap, and vinegar (it is the vinegar that really eliminates the odor, and the other ingredients are to minimize the vinegar smell to you!)
Or he could be developing a bladder problem that needs to be checked out by a vet.
Or he could just be suddenly having separation anxiety, and is unable to control it.
Or he may just be upset at being left alone, Some dogs can be very vindictive at times, and this is his only way to show you that he is upset!

I would have to say that if the dog is NOT neutered, HAVE HIM NEUTERED!!!!!!
If he IS neutered, try leaving the t.v. on so he doesn't feel alone.
Otherwise, leave him outside in a WELL FENCED area when you are not at home. It may just be psychological, separation anxiety. There may also be physical reasons. If this behavior continues, take him to the Vet for a check-up, have labs run?

Put him in the bathroom when you leave, with food & water. Make sure he is neutered. He might have a bladder problem. Use bottled water or well water, there are nasty chemicals in city water, flouride is hazardous to people as well as some pets. Research the hazards. Make sure he goes outside before you leave.

first check with your vet he could have a urinary infecton or have problems holdijng it.... if you just recently started leaving him alone it could be a little bit of anxity.. really we need mor info to help.... do you notice him going out more while you are there??? any recent changes??? any number of things could be the cause but my guess is that he is having a little bit of seperation anxity.... Like I said Talk to your vet and have him checked.
the crate thing is a wonderful idea they are den aniamals and will not go where they have to lay or sleep..... also it will give some security and might help with the anxity...

That should not be happening but maybe before you leave the house, you should put your dog in something like a crate so your dog might go in its crate instead of somewhere else.

Your dog is mad at you for leaving him home alone. This is his way of telling you that he is pissed off.........LOL
My dog does the same thing when I leave him alone in the house if even only for 30 minutes.
and just like my dog went to the vet this morning and he pee'd on the vets pant leg. He was mad and he let her know it......lol
