Hell is the state of existence the eternal Spirit soul places themselves in when through mis-use of free will, they choose to exist separately from God.
When that happens, the soul falls down to the material world and becomes covered over by the illusory or temporary energy of the Supreme, the living entity is then responsible for their own activities, under the universal law of Karma they transmigrate from one material body to another.
This is indeed a hellish situation and if the human form of life is not used with the free will reinstated, to resurrect the Spiritual body and purify one's existence, then things can get much worse, dependant upon the activities performed and the desires developed.
Being in a human form is like driving a fast sports car, it can very quickly take you to the proper destination, but if mis-used can quickly drive you off the road.
Bhagavad Gita Chapter 8 Verse 16
From the highest planet in the material world, down to the lowest, all are places of suffering wherein repeated birth and death take place. But one who attains to my abode(The Spiritual world) never takes birth again.
To go back home, back to Godhead, raise questions as far as the intelligence will allow and present them to:-Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari (sda@backtohome.com)

Hell is after this life, but this life can be so hard at times that it seems like hell but it isn't. When you die, your soul goes to heaven or hell. If we were living in hell now, we would only say that we are because we are going through terrible times, but what about people who have great lives all the time? They are on earth as well but they wouldn't say that they are in hell. Hell is where the unsaved go when they die. Hell is much worse than any pain that you can experience on earth, but the bible tell us that this life is full of trouble, so why have trouble here then die and go to hell??? You can have better if you only accept Christ as your Lord and Savior and believe that He is the Son of God and God raised Him from the dead.

There are many people out here that thinks that their lives are a living hell, but they do not have a clue of what hell really mean and is, hell. is just a common grave. And if they are still moaning and groaning about their lives they are not in hell. and what most people believe is hell is the fiery pit what will burn forever is what will happen after the judgment day...... when all life here on earth will be judge............

I believe that we make our own Hells here on earth.
I also believe that it depends on your particular religious views. If you believe that you will be going to Hell, then you will.
My personal belief is that Hell is a place that we punish our selves. More than likely in the 'here-and-now" and no where else.
The Old Testment does not speak of Hell like the New Testament does. It only speaks of "Sheol" a place of holding, waiting & rest.
Hell is a New Testment thought. And evolved with the 1st century church, into the "Fire-n-Brimstone" place that is preached so much today.

Hell is here as well as Paradise. Hormone count in the body creates both states. Our thoughts, memories, feelings and deeds ignite the action of glands which regulate hormone count. So through enhanced awareness, proper choice of life style one can better rule life and influence on the result (living in the Hell or Paradise).

Sometimes I think earth is a Hell because a lot of things have become worse and worse but the real Hell is where you're going to really, really, really suffer. If you think earth is bad, well, Hell is way worse. It's where the other people who don't believe that Jesus died for us goes and so they are separated from God.

In most of the bible the word "hell" or geenna {gheh'-en-nah} (in the Greek) can be defined as: "This was originally the valley of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, where the filth and dead animals of the city were cast out and burned; a fit symbol of the wicked and their future destruction." It can mean a form of degradation.
It also can be: sh@'owl {sheh-ole'} or sh@ol {sheh-ole'}, which means the grave.
The actual "HELL" that you are referring to is only mentioned four times in the bible. It is the lake of fire: hades {hah'-dace}.
Rev 1:18, 6:8, 20:13, 20:14.

because the physical and astral planes so closely overlap, it can seem like hell is here or here is hell, but the fact of the matter is we create our own personal hells which, if we truly believe we'll end up after we pass, then we will. this mainly happens with people who have lived with no belief system of a higher power and who have succumbed to a life of addiction and emotional anguish.

hell is in the after life where all the people that were bad find out that they cant live with god and have all the things that he will give to the good.
so in effect they create there own hell on earth by not doing as he has asked us already.

I would say that Hell starts here, inside each man who chooses to walk the path of darkness, and continues after death for those who do not repent.
Similar situation with Heaven.
