I dread starting high school, more than ever, probably because I haven't made any significent progress in any area of life. I was more of a profilic writer at age twelve than I am now, though now my ideas are probably a little less worthless since life experience makes them less hollow. But, alas, the writer's block will now cease. Intellectually, I'm probably more capable and more apt at processing things but I have zero willpower and never do anything. Which depresses me greatly, but I have no initiative or motivitation.

I am definitely not where I wanted to be at 14 (turning fourteen on the 13th). Not that I consciously thought 'I will be good at such and such when I'm 14', but I did think, subconsciously, that I'd have made some progress. Depressing.

I suppose I'll just stop moaning and do something (though I'm not sure how to do this!). See, it's an endless cycle of being unproductive, realizing I'm unproductive, being depressed about it, and going back to being unproductive.

Well, yes, I do have friends. Why would you assume otherwise? I'm just not "attached" to them excessively.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is I've beeing spending my summer being lazy, watching tv, talking about pointless things when I should be reading, writing, harnessing my creativity, gathering knowledge. I want to do those things but I'm too lazy.

No one can make you. Only you can make yourself succeed.

I'm a high school teacher. DO NOT WORRY! Going from 8th to 9th grade is no different than going from 7th to 8th unless of course you are going to a different school or moving. If you are just going from the middle school to the high school in the same district, then you will at least be going with the same group of kids you already know.

It will take you about 3 days to get used to the high school, you'll be more comfortable than you think, and after a few weeks the freshman class will act like it owns the school. You'll love it! I see this every year.

HAVE FUN!

High school is a great opportunity to start stuff. Lots of extracurricular clubs to join and interests to explore. You sound like an intellectual writer. You may consider joining your school newspaper to share your insights or joining a debate team such as Model United Nations. Your ideas are always valuable no matter how old you are.
And a lot of incoming freshmen will be exactly like you. They'll be worried. But stick together. Hopefully a nice upperclassmen will help you feel more comfortable. If not the teachers are pretty good about easing you into high school. There really isn't a huge difference in going from middle school to high school. Middle school was designed as a way to transit from elementary to high school. Some countries don't even have middle schools so you already have an advantage over those students.

Your summer sounds like an average summer. It's nice to relax. Depending on your workload, social commitments, and extracurricular activities, it seems that you don't have enough time to relax by yourself in HS speaking from personal experience.
Pick an interest and follow it. Join that club. Write a story. Go and explore and think about what you want out of high school. It's whatever you make out of it but it's fun.

Good luck and enjoy your summer.

High school is really not that much different than middle school except that you have more choices of classes and often the school has a lot more students.

It does sound as if you are depressed. My parents never let me be unproductive. I had a babysitting job at age of 12 and I babysat for 30 hours a week during the school year and 70 hours a week the rest of the year. I am not exaggerating. I paid for my first year of college with babysitting money.

You sound interested in writing. Take a class in writing after school. Some colleges have classes for your age group. Subscribe to Writers Digest.

I don't know what type of writing you like but science fiction conventions have panels on how to write books and short stories.

Here is wishing you success.

Relax, sweetheart. High School isn't that much different than Jr. High. You're about to be fourteen. You still have three or four years until you graduate. It is good to be thinking of your future, but you needn't obsess over it at this point.

You say you have no motivation. Well, then you need to get something. Start a reward process with yourself. You could treat yourself to something really nice, such as a food you normally try to cut out of your diet because it is unhealthy. Maybe you cut out candy bars? Well, give yourself a candy bar everytime you go two weeks straight of completeing all of your homework and studying. If you don't think you can do that, then talk to your teachers about it. I'm sure they'll be able to give you some tips to get yourself motivated.

I would say the best thing is to start exercising if your not on any sports team. I'm on my football team so it helps to have an obligation to things and it helps to make a habit out of managing your personal time with work time.

Try this: the next time you feel like watching T.V. or going on the computer just go for a mile jog. I know exercise has nothing to do with school work but it actually makes you feel good about yourself and it gives you more energy.

As simple as it sounds, just stop using all your electronics so excessively.

One more really important thing. High school isn't as hard as it sounds. In fact it's not hard at all. The only difference is you spend more time doing more homework, so just give yourself more time to do work and you should be fine.

The most important to realize though is that you have complete control over your life now. You can get bad grades in high school and you will most likely go nowhere in life. BUT if you have great success in high school, many colleges will come looking for you and they will be willing to give you a free education and you will be set for life. My mom showed me this when she got a scholarship at the age of 39 to UCLA.

Sounds like you have a lot going for you but may be depressed. Do you have friends? At your age, you should be having fun with them and not worrying so much about what you should be doing. 14 is young and you have your whole life to be productive. For now, do well in school (I'm sure you are capable), make friends, find a hobby or sport and RELAX!!!

Don't beat yerself up so much. 14 seems old to a 14year old, but ya got alot of living to look forward 2! I suspect being nervous about going to high school's about the most universal commonality of anything. The years to come will bring some of te biggest personality changes, but can be as much an adventure as an ordeal. As we age, our interests change. What we're "into" is of course much, much easier than what we're force fed by the education system. I'd not think of being young as being "worthless" ya don't have the frame of reference or knowledge gained by age sure, but that don't mean ya don't have value and wisdom.
Ya might consider the other's advice of counseling. (not knowin yer particulars, I can only go by what ya write) But it strikes me that instead of bein down about where you're at, try using it as a motivation. Try not to worry about what others think. You'll always be able to find someone willing to make fun, but it's usually caus they're threatened by someone secure enough to do their own thing and "to hell with what anyone thinks" attitude.
