Its called the parathyroid.
They have nothing really to do with the thyroid, but sit right behind and aside the thyroid. They synthesize calicium for the body.

I had thyroid cancer and had my thyroid out last year. I had to stay in the hospital mostly to make sure my parathyroids were not bruised because non-absorption of calcium can be life threatening.

You will be alright. It is a very safe surgery. If you are only having 1 taken out - even easier. If they take them all out then you'll just need to take Tums or a similar calcium supplement. You just take double than the instructions say and I thik it was more often too. The scar is small and it is very hard to see after the 2nd year. Also, they sell Mederma now which reduces raised scar tisssue. It is done in the crease in the front of the neck. Pick a good surgeon though. Talk to other patients in your doctors office, if he/she can arrange that for you. You're just a litle sore for about a week afterwards and those lemon swabs are helpful in the hospital for dryness (from the anesthesia or the breathing tube that is down your throat.) I have 2 good surgeons if your in the midwest.
