Depends. Butt pat + "Godd job, Frank." Not sexual harrassment. Butt pat + "Give me a little sugar, Frank" Sexual harrassment.

The only time I ever punched a guy was for a butt pat. And my fist went into his saggy soft belly right up to the wrist. And it felt good. I'm not especially proud of that, and should have handled it better, but it just made me mad. Plus this guy had a rep for annoying behaviour to most of the other women in the office as well. Would he think I was just being friendly if I tweaked his you-know-what?
Anyway, I don't consider butt pats friendly, unless they are delivered by a VERY close friend, in VERY friendly circumstances, when were were mutually expressing friendship.

If the pat on the butt is to a co-worker of the opposite sex and in a workplace enviroment then yes it could be constituted as sexual harrasment .. there is however no grey area on this .. there's only if you did it or not .. let's consider some things however ..

If you know this person relatively well and by that i mean intimately well to the point that you two have a possibility of dating and she won't decide to complain to the boss or the immediate manager about this then i say you are on the safe zone ... mind you though alot of workplaces don't allow relationships to happen during workplace hours ..

If this was something you randomly did because you find a co-worker attractive then i would back away .. and let things cool down before approaching this co-worker even for a little chit chat .. say hello ... say bye...talkbout work related stuff .. but don't go beyond that .. sexual harrasment is pretty serious and last thing you want is to be in that situation ... it'll affect future job opportunities ..

Good luck and don't worry about it too much! if she is mature enough she will come to you and discuss it with you! even if she comes up to you to discuss this 'issue' with her don't immediately jump the gun thinking that she's there to screw up your life! talking is always the best way to disarm a delicate situation :)

have a good one and good luck!

According to new guidelines, sexual harassment claims can only be lodged if the recipient of the harassment has made two clear efforts to have the harassment stop and only if they make sure they say to the harasser 'No, stop, I don't like what you're doing, I don't want you to do that to me'. OR something along those lines.

And yes, it is sexual harassment - unless the recipient wants the butt-patt. However, that said, I doubt there would be many females out there who wouldn't feel like reacting to a 'friendly butt pat' by instinctively kicking one of their legs back like a horse and hoping to connect their well shod foot with genitals.

Also, you might want to note, it borders on sexual assault - the pat that is, not the genital kick.

It's all about appropriateness. Trust your instincts. If a butt pat by a certain person in a certain circumstance doesn't feel right to you, then it isn't right, or friendly. It's sexual harassment, no matter where it takes place.

It is always inappropriate behavior for the workplace. If an employer allows this type of behavior (whether or not somebody complains) it can be used as proof that the employer is allowing a "hostile" work environment to exist. That can result in a sexual harrassment problem.

Depends on where the pat is placed

It would really depend. Some coworkers I think of doing this and it's a definite YES, other's a NO - it really depends on the person and the relationship you have as far as how it's going to be taken.

Yes ! I for one do not want some one touching me with out my permission on any part of my body. So unless she gave you permission you are wrong very wrong. What you consider friendly someone else dose not, the bottom is a personal spot.

It depends on who is doing the friendly patting - your immediate supervisor? YES.
