From a battlefield stand point you would have to go with General MacArthur, his New Guinea campaign was brilliant, and his savvy about landing in the Philippines in October 44 is outstanding. He still however was foolish when he had all the information in the world about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and left his planes parked in the open at Clarkfield, to be bombed like sitting ducks on a pond.
General Eisenhower was a babysitter who knew out to manage Prima Donna's. The broad front strategy was the best possible, as great as General Patton is he would have out ran his supplies and been cut off. General Marshall knew how to control President Roosevelt, and keep Nazi Germany as the main enemy, not Imperial Japan.
Finally to my fellow military historians, Field Marshall Rommel and Colonel General Guderian maybe the two best tactical German Generals of the war, but Field Marshall Eric von Manstein is the best German General of the war. He had the original plan for the German invasion of France in 1940, and got Hitler to agree to it. His campaign against Sevastopol in 1942 was brilliant, and several times from Stalingrad to May of 44 he successfully stabilized and cut off Russian tank and shock troop spearheads in the Southern/Ukrainian Front. And of coarse like any of the German Generals who really knew how to fight, he was sacked by Hitler, never to fight in the war again.

Just so you know, it was Guderian. Anyway, George C. Marshall was the best of the three general officers. MacArthur and even Eisenhower were better at playing the political game, which Marshall refused to play.
If it were up to me - Patton v. Rommel. Best of the best of all time.

MacArthur, of the three. Eisenhower was a logistic genius, key to managing a traditional front line war. Marshall was a bureaucrat. MacArthur was in the thick of it, understood the value of a strong leader, and questioned his leadership when apprpriate, to the point of being fired for being right.

They were all excellent generals, but in my opinion Douglas MacArthur was the best. He was a leader in winning the war in the Pacific and like any good general he kept his promises.

Macarthur easily was the best military man of this triio. The man had his problems, but strategically far superior to the other two.

I would have to pick George Marshall. His military career up to and including the war was exceptional to say nothing of his experiences after the war.
