I don't really see it as a big deal because I don't put liquid or gels in my luggage but people who wear contacts find that no contact solution is a VERY big pain because of the dry-eye conditions that exist in the pressurized plane cabin.

I have a friend travelling tomorrow, he says all he ever takes on an airplane anymore is his wallet anyway. I've found since 9/11, the fewer items you bring through the security checkpoint, the smoother everything goes. I'm planning to fly to New York City next month, and I'll just prepare to follow the new restrictions, assuming they're still in place then. It's really not that big of a deal to check stuff, as long as you know you need to do it. I think people today were pretty shocked when they got to the airports and found out about the new restrictions, but the news didn't interview anyone who was overly upset about it.
