It's hard to estimate just how much violence is directly linked to revenge, but it's probably way too much and in wartime it gets completely out of proportion, with many eyes dying to avenge a few. Revenge never brings peace. All it can do is perpetuate itself.
Much of the world is already blind or at least refuses to see.

I think this goes to the old Jewish saying predating the New Testament. It was like common law, allowing a victim limited revenge against his attacker, usually presided over by some authority to keep it civil. These days it's the battle cry of Israeli jew and Palestinian muslim alike.
Eye4eye, tooth4tooth, life4life just doesn't work with millenia of ancestral slights being kept tally. If the Mideast and even the whole world can't adopt a clean slate, love thy neighbor policy, we'll all eventually be sucked into Armageddon.

While I love this quote and agree with it, I have to say that if it really was an eye for an eye, we wouldn't go blind, we would have empty eye sockets which would result in us not being able to see.

Eye for an eye means no excessive punishment.
Eye for an eye is compassionate in a society where people had their hands chopped off for stealing. We fail to understand why 'eye for eye' is good because our punishments today are much less severe than punishments were in ancient times.

The New Testament quote [one of the most famous misquotes] is, "Some say an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. I say, turn the other cheek." Jesus Christ
so, to answer your question, yes, exactly!!!

Yes. For one, those who follow this is already blind. revenge only leads to more revenge, whether it is from the wrong doer or the friend of the wrong doer. Taking revenge on the wrong doer will cause both the wrong doer and the friends to want further revenge on you.
