I believe you are describing Vishnu (a Hindu god).
And excellent point. How do you know there is only one god (please please please don't say 'because the bible says so') for all you know there could be a whole host of gods out there... or none at all.
[ God: Jesus Christ!
Jesus: Yes? Oh no!
God: Get the escalade, were out of here!]

Charles G. Finney once said "think, think, think...it will do you good to think". And that is what we have to do in order to really get to know something about God.
Many of the things that we watch on TV only confuses us, but if you go further and really search for the truth instead of trying to defend your point surely you will get the truth and truth is God as Gandhi said.
If you read the Historical Books of Flavius Josefus, you will find that he was a researcher instead of a religious man and he recorded many interesting thing. One passage that gives me a basis to affirm that there is only one God is when he described the arrival of Abraham to Egypt. There Abraham saw that Egyptians tended to adore everything they saw in nature (and basically this is the origin of the polytheism, to adore the different manufestations of the nature, look at the gods of Asgard, Greece, ancient Latin America, etc).
Abraham saw that although Egyptians adored the sun as a god and the moon as another god, and the like, all of them followed an order everyday, then he knew that there was eomthing more powerful ruling them and that is why he dismissed the religion of the egyptians. This along the experience that he was having with the personal God that was leading them.
It is the same nowadays, although you may believe that the universe is in chaos, is all the other way. There is a magnificent order in the whole universe. Even Einstein said that God did not play dice with the universe, making reference to the order that he saw in the Universe. Such a cosmical order could not be kept if there were many gods fighting against each other as in the Greek mythology.
There is one living God. The problem is that sometimes our minds are very limited to understand his nature and mostly because nowadays we do not like to think, to research, to read. We only take what the TV or movies give us.
A few years ago I travelled to Egypt and I found that even among a polytheist society Akhenaton, a Pharao knew that there was one single God, because of the resoning stated above. He was to establish the monotheism in Egypt but he was very young and was murdered by the priests of his time.
God reveals his truth to whomever wishe to hear it. Take the time to hear his voice, love the truth and you will never miss the way, he will reveal you wonders and misteries about him. But don't expect anything from him with no effort. you will not get this on MTV or VH1.

A wicked a adulterous generation asks for a sign. How many more signs do we need? The evidence is right in front of us. Why is it that some can see it so plainly and others do not? Because some are looking and others only look away. They refuse to see. Does Christ need to die on the cross again and then again. Surely anyone who would want this does not love God. What is in the heart of the person who looks at creation and then thumbs his nose at God? How many more signs do we need?

You know this is a fair question because there is so much confusion when it comes to religion. Hindus believe in millions of Gods. Christians believe in one. Who is right? Or is one God more powerful than the other? Good questions.
There is a way you can know for yourself what is true. Much like an experience in life, that one person may have, but in telling you about it, you really can't relate to it. It is having the experience and learning first hand what it's like, that is what knowing that there is only one God is like...and who He is.
I believe the statement of Jesus Christ in John 14:6, that there is only one way to God, and that is by Him. I believe there is one God only, one true God, and that is the God of the bible. Yes, there are many, many false gods. False, because they do not exist.
I pray in Jesus' name that God show you the answers, and guide you to the truth.

On the point of "only one god" and to comment on another answer about asigning jealousy to god, one of the older versions of the 10 commandments quotes the hebrew god as saying to Moses:
"Thou shalt have no other god but me for I am a jealous god".
This very sentence not only shows that the hebrew god admits to one of his own sins (jealousy) but also admits that there are other gods, for if the hebrew god was the only god, he would know that there were no others to be jealous of.
Now, to answer "whodunnit", if you beleive in only one god, then by default you attribute all miracles to him, as in monotheistic religions, the miraculous doings of prophets and messiahs are attributed to power given to them by that god.
If you are part of a polytheistic religion (as I am) then you should truly know the work of each of your gods and goddesses. The world over, every day, millions of people unknowingly recogonise the work of one particular god, many times it will be him, others it's just coincidence. I'd bet that every single person who has english as their first language has at some point said "that was lucky" in reference to a close call or some such. what they are actually doing is saying the modern equivalent of "that was Loki", the norse god of mischief.
The gods of many religions are said to have shown themselves repeatedly in the past, many of the norse gods & goddesses are said to walk the earth regularly as men and women just like the rest of us. If you are to believe in any of these supernatural immortal ancient beings, then you must also understand that to them thousands of years are but the blink of an eye, and the time between their appearances is minimal. Trouble is, we live for but a short time in this world, and may not be present in the right place or time to witness such an event.
Just because there is no one alive that personally met Shakespeare, doesn't mean that he never lived, even though all we have to prove his existence are some writings and a few paintings. We just don't dispute his existence because all we have to do to believe in him is to enjoy a few plays (or fail our english literature exams)

1. The blue guy is Vishnu, an ancient Hindu god.
2. Why should we attribute human tendencies, like jealousy, to a god figure? Shouldn't he/she/it be well above and beyond all that pettiness, if we're going to believe they are so great and wondeful? Just my thought.

That's why YHVH said, demonstrated and proved "I Am the God amongst gods" in Exodus.
There's a reason the elohim don't show themselves to everyone now - they are bound and YHVH makes the choice to reveal -- and our earthly journey is about our choices. YHVH is not looking for people jumping on the bandwagon for self-preservation, YHVH is looking for genuine.

ok, im a Baha'i and i belive that there is only ONE God. i think the reason that God does not phisically show Himself is because we need to learn to trust and have faith in God. but if u look at history, you can see that God has indeed showed Himself to us through the Manifestations like Krishna, Buddha, Moses, Zoroaster, Christ, ... and most recently, Baha'u'llah. Basically we can know God through the Prophets He sends us. thats how i know...

Well there are pantheists that believe that the cosmos is God and ever creature in it can be thought of as gods when they really aren't. They're called false gods. They're usually associated with demons or something.

I think it's sexy that you like Family Guy. Remember only one God exists, if any. Right now the only one that proves he exists is Satan, because his work is everywhere. One day people will realize how awful goodness is.
