When shopping for clams, keep in mind the terms "cherrystone" and "little neck" signify a size difference.
In identifying the varieties, the taste and texture pros and cons, and some of the best beaches to locate them all. Cherry stone, also called the Pacific little neck; Manilas, referred to many as steamers; and butter clams.
The longer the neck, the more it has to travel to the surface and work out to become tough. The shorter the neck, the more tender the meat.
Cherrystone: Up to 3 inches in size, are named for Cherrystone Creek, Virginia. Recommended for eating raw and cooking. This is usually what you get when ordering clams on the half-shell.
Littleneck: Small quahogs less than 2-3/4 inches are so named for Littleneck Bay on Long Island, New York. These clams are generally recommended for eating raw and in chowders.
Hope this helps you out!

The Little Neck (named after Little Neck Bay on the northeast coast of New York’s Long Island, once a thriving center of the halfshell trade) is the smallest (and most expensive) size of hard clam. Little Necks average about 10 to 12 per pound.
Other common hard clam sizes include: Topnecks, which average 6 to 8 per pound, Cherrystones (named after Cherrystone Creek on Virginia’s Eastern Shore), which average 3 to 5 per pound and Chowders or Quahogs, which average 1 to 2 clams per pound..

The smallest are Littleneck clams, which are the tenderest and sweetest and have a shell diameter of less than 2 inches.
The medium sized, Cherrystone Clam, is about 2 1/2 inches across.
