I may be able to answer this correctly. Grandfather was a big German country boy in his youth. He bailed hay all day long 7 days a week. The work is so hard and strenuous it makes you very strong. The same motion is used delivering a wild punch. If someone could hit THAT hard, they said, That guy is a "hay maker"". So if you throw a "hay maker" it means to demonstrate power. Grampa is 75, I am powerful, I still wouldn't let him hit me. I hope that is a better answer than you have.
