I think It's just an international hairstyle.The American Indian comes to mind where even the men wear them. Then there is the popular French braid. The little Dutch girl braids. My grandmother was from Germany and always wore her hair in a braided bun. And also the Bahama Beach braids. I really don't think that any single country takes ownership of the braid.
