Anything can make you fat if you eat enough and don't exercise. However, but you should clarify with your doctor if he wants you to stay away from all sugars, which would be hard to do, or just refined sugars.

I don't know why he told you that, and it does depend on the reason. Are you diabletic? overweight? ummm.. I give up.
there are different kinds of sugars, glucose, dextrose, fructose, etc. and there are complex sugars like lactose. And there are various sources of sugar,, some being almost pure sugar, and some being included in a lot of other things in the food.
Generally speaking,, staying away from sugar means things like candy, soda, cake and things with high sugar content. And do you mean fresh fruit? or canned or dried fruit? Fresh fruit is probably okay,,, some canned fruits are packed in sugar syrup and wouldn't be okay.
Best thing to do is to ask your doctor what he means.

It would take a lot and i mean a LOT of fruit to make anyone gain weight, but the sugar in the fruit can slow down weight loss. You should probably call your doctor and ask him if he was talking about fruit as well.

it depends why he said that. there is sugar in fruit, but a doctor would only say that if they wanted to do a test for diabetes, maybe, or you have a temporary condition that limits your sugar, in which case don't eat fruit either. fruit should not be an issue in weight control unless you eat like 10 bananas a day...lol.

Fruit can't make you fat, but fruit is high in sugars. If your doctor was not specific just cut out the empty calories of candies, sodas, sweet tea, sugar in coffee, or on cerals, sweetened cereals syrups, deserts, and etc.

he means sugar as in carbohydrates, donuts, soft drinks. Fruits even though sweet are naturally sweet so it's okay to eat them like grapes. Fruits will not fatten you. Junk food will.
