In the beginning, there was the wine cooler, and it was good. I love mixing wine with other drinks like iced tea and fruit drinks.

But somewhere along the way, we were betrayed. What used to be called "wine coolers" were now just "coolers". Examine the label and you'll see that they are a "flavored malt beverage" or "flavored beer". What happened? Why no more wine? Did it merely become cheaper to make "flavored beer" than genuine wine coolers?

I don't think they ever were made out of wine. They've pretty much always been a malt beverage - they probably had to change the packaging to reflect this.

What Happened To Wine Coolers

The actual reason is this... The Democrats killed the wine cooler. Think I'm kidding, read on... In 1991 the Democrats controlled all of Congress, the Senate, and the Presidency. Wine coolers were the most popular drink in the United States and Yes they were made with wine. - The Federal excise tax on a gallon of wine at the time was 17 cents. The Democrats, seeing an opportunity to bleed both people and successful companies raised the Federal excise tax on a gallon of wine to $1.07 a gallon. This made the commercial production of wine coolers less profitable than retooling and instead creating malt based products which did not have the wine tax. - That's what killed wine coolers - the Democrats.

Yes, wine coolers existed and were made from wine. However, in 1991, Congress passed a new tax hike on items that were seen as staples of the rich, such as boats, airplanes, jewelry, and wine. Beer was not taxed, because it was seen as a drink of the working man. As a result, the American boat and aircraft manufacturing business declined when the customers bought those items out of country. Also wine coolers went away, when Federal taxes on wine increased from .17/gallon to $1.07/gallon. Wine was replaced by beer as the alcoholic base for the coolers since it was less-taxed at .58/gallon. Another example of the government messing up a good thing.

1) Because no men ever drank them
2) Because the female drinkers of them realized they were lame too

After the wine coolers 'disappeared' Zima came along. I wonder if that's still around...

BTW, if you recall the original ads with those 2 old guys "Bartles & James" commercials where 2 folksy guys would banter back and forth and end with "we thank you for your support." ?

Bartles & James was produced by Earnest & Julio Gallo whos phrase, at the time, was "we sell no wine before its time"

Something there just didn't make sense - like Ruth's Chris steakhouse selling McDonalds Burgers. Perhaps this is why they disappeared.
