Something that works, but it might take a little practice to get the right amount of curl is this:
1.Take some old material (like from an old shirt or bedsheet), and cut it into strips - about 2cm (1 inch) thick and about 15cm long.
2. At night, wash and dry your hair until it is almost completely dry - just a little damp but not wet. Add a little mouse or light gel.
3. Take a small amount of hair, and wrap the end around the strip - always curl the hair downwards towards your body, and not outwards.
4. Twirl the strip until the hair is wrapped up to about 5cm from the scalp, and tie it so that it will not come undone by itself.
5. Repeat until all hair is tied up.
6. Leave in overnight
7. Gently untie and unroll each strip starting with the lower ones.
8. Comb gently with your fingers into a style that you like - do NOT use a brush or a comb or the curls will fall or frizz.
9. Use a little bit of hairspray especially if it is a wet day.
It does take practice, so be prepared to try it on a night before a weekend or something when you have time to wash it out if it is too curly.
Good luck.

Try steam curlers or old-fashioned sponge curlers. Also, before you go to sleep at night, try a variation of a pin curl. You can experiment by taking 1/4 inch strands of your hair, twisting your hair into tight coils, and bobby-pinning each individual hair coil in an X formation using bobby pins. Sleep on these curls and take out the bobby pins in the morning and you should achieve a wavy look without the use of hairspray. I have found the last technique to be especially helpful for my wavy-straight hair. Additionally, you can buy a curling iron with a larger barrel. It sounds like your curling iron is skinny, which is the cause for kinky-tight curls.

Pin curls: Spiral small bits of wet hair with your finger pressing toward scalp, secure with a bobby pin, dry overnight, let dry naturally, or blow dry gently. When you release the bobby pins you'll get long lasting springy curls, especially if you use a bit of hair gel/spray before curling. Beware, the curls are long lasting and can be tight depending on how small of sections you spiral. I used to do my sister's hair when we were little every night before Sunday church, but its easy to do your own once you practice. Takes a bit of time when you first start, soon you'll be finished in five minutes.
Another idea, if you can afford a pricier option, is Hot Rods or any brand like them. These are curling rods made of flexible metal covered with soft plastic. Again, beware, these are longer lasting than curling irons and can make very tight curls depending on how small you roll the hair sections, although not as tight or long lasting as pin curls.

I have very straight and very heavy hair and although i use a very hot iron these days, years ago we used to use cloth. Cut strips of cotton ( an old pillowcase is good) into about 8" lengths and wind your wet hair around them and then tie the ends together and sleep on them. in the morning your hair will be curled. We called them rag curls and they lasted a long time.

In the old days they tore up clean rags into strips and rolled their hair in them. It makes for very tight curls, but you will need assistance doing the back part of the head.
to curl tear a strip 4 to 6 inches long, divide up your hair the way you wish to roll it, and starting at the edge of the hair roll it slowly toward the head and tie off when you get it to your head.
Or they also used to use bobby pins and made pin curls. Roll a small chunk of hair around your finger and slip off the finger and place Bobbie pins in a cross form to hold it in place.
Braiding the hair in narrow tight braids was also used,

Buy some hair curlers, after you take your shower, blow dry it a little (since its thick) and put in hair curlers... but put them is as tight as you can in ur hair, that is unless you dont want that type of a curl, and leave them in for about 8 hours. But its much easier to put them in before you sleep, so take a shower some time in the evening-night, and sleep in them.
Hope I Helped :)

There are specail shampoos that make board straight hair curley. You could try that I don't know how good they work I've never used it but its worth a try and costs less than a curling iron

Use rollers, wash your hair, use some type of curling serum, and towel-dry. After put in rollers, go to bed and you'll wake up with some permanent curls.
