George Washington hands down. Not only did Gen. Washington fight under unimaginable conditions and led us to a victory over the British, he was also a man of extraordinary character. Washington's officers wanted to make him the "King" of America, and he unselfishly refused the position, insisting in a free government. He also stopped a would-be rebellion of revolutionary war veterans who were planning to march on the capitol because they had not yet been paid. Thanks to a presidential executive order, he is, and always will be, the highest ranking military officer of the United States.

Greatest in terms of tactical genius goes to Stonewall Jackson, in particular his exploits in the Shenandoah Valley and Chanclorsville against forces larger than his. Many historians argue that if he was alive at Gettysburg, he would've taken the high ground on the day one of the battle and the outcome would more than likely been a confederate victory.....

George Washington certainly deserves that distinction. This was a man who fought unbearable conditions and isolation, yet kept up the fight that won our country's independence. No man. no politician, no military man accomplished more than Washington!
